Witnesses sought in County Rd. 37 rollover

A one-vehicle rollover on County Road 37 has prompted a call from the Wright County Sheriff’s Department for witnesses to the accident.

The crash occurred on May 22 at about 8:30 a.m. just east of Maple Lake. According to the Sheriff’s Department, Phillip Carl Pope, 30, of Monticello was westbound on Co. Rd. 37 near the Maple Lake airport. Pope’s vehicle entered the north ditch and hit a culvert washout area in the ditch. Pope’s 1995 Suzuki rolled multiple times before coming to rest at the edge of the road in the westbound lane. He was wearing his seatbelt and had to be removed from the vehicle by the Maple Lake Fire Department. Pope was transported to Buffalo Hospital in serious condition.

Maple Lake Fire Chief Todd Borell said that since Pope’s vehicle came to rest on its side, Tom Blizil entered the SUV through the back window to stabilize Pope while rescue personnel cut all the support posts in the roof and peeled the top off. “That’s what we train for,” Borell said. “When we get there, we get them out.”  Borell said the road was closed for about half an hour while the effort was being made to remove Pope from his vehicle.  Evidence at the accident scene indicated that another vehicle may have been indirectly involved or witnessed the accident. The Sheriff’s Office would like to speak with anybody who might have witnessed or have information regarding the accident.  Stacy Doyle, victim assistance coordinator, said Pope was released from the hospital on Monday, but Sheriff’s Department personnel haven’t yet been able to get a statement from him because of his injuries and are still seeking the public’s assistance.  If you have any information regarding this accident, please call the Wright County Sheriff’s Office at 763-682-7635.
