One-car crash kills Howard Lake man

Wright County Sheriff Gary L. Miller reports that on August 27, 2003, at 9:35 p.m., the Wright County Sheriff’s Communications Center received a report of a one-vehicle accident in the 5600 block of County Road #7 SW in Middleville Township that claimed the life of Melmer John Lahr, a 69-year-old Howard Lake resident.

Upon arrival, personnel discovered a 1991 Ford Explorer to be fully engulfed in flames with heavy damage sustained by the front end of the vehicle. The Howard Lake Fire Department extinguished the flames and found that the driver and sole occupant of the vehicle, Lahr, had died at the scene.      The initial investigation indicates that Lahr was traveling northbound on Co. Rd. 7 in Middleville Township, when the vehicle left the road into the east ditch, striking a tree.

The Wright County Sheriff’s Office and Howard Lake Fire Department responded to the scene. The accident remains under investigation by the Wright County Sheriff’s Office.
