Campaign targets impaired drivers

Wright County’s Safe and Sober enforcement campaign continues during the last two weekends in October. Extra officers will be patrolling the streets on October 24, 25 and again on Halloween, keeping roadways safe by arresting impaired drivers.

Deputies and officers working the first weekend will focus their efforts on detecting impaired motorists on Hwy. 55 from Rockford through South Haven. On Halloween, the effort will be focused in city limits where children will be out trick or treating.

October is traditionally a deadly month for alcohol-related traffic deaths. Last October in Minnesota, alcohol was a contributing factor in 18 deaths and 365 injuries. Overall in 2002, alcohol-related crashes killed 239 Minnesotans. Another 4,221 persons were injured; 627 of them severely.

“With Halloween falling on a Friday, law enforcement in Wright County is expecting a busy night. If you plan on drinking, please plan ahead and arrange a sober ride or other travel arrangements,” said Wright County Sheriff Gary Miller. “If you drive after drinking and are stopped, the officers are not going to take you where you had planned to go.”
