Maple Lake school staff honored

Five teachers in Maple Lake were honored at the 12th Annual Leadership in Educational Excellence (LEEA) Banquet and Awards Ceremony on October 29.

Honored from Maple Lake Schools were Dave Hansen, high school Social Studies teacher; Debra Craft, district media specialist; Cyndi Jakel, sixth grade teacher; and Eric Meyer, high school English teacher. Also honored was Sue Sylvester from the Meeker & Wright Special Education Cooperative, which provides educational services for the Westside Academy at the Maple Lake Recovery Center.

The LEEA event is an opportunity to recognize educators for serving as a model of excellence to their fellow educators and students. This year’s event recognized 150 honorees from 37 school districts and two Special Education cooperatives from Central Minnesota.

The LEEA ceremony is the only event of its kind in Minnesota, representing all aspects of public and private education from classroom teacher to specialists. The event is sponsored by Resource Training & Solutions, a Minnesota service cooperative.

Daniel Brooks, superintendent of the Sauk Centre School District, served as the emcee for the evening and read the names of the honorees as they received their plaques and certificates signed by Governor Tim Pawlenty. Brooks commended the recipients and said that they’ll never know how they’ve affected a student until years later.   “You may never know which day is going to be the one that counts,” he said.
