Elementary principal resigns, board begins hiring process

Last year, Maple Lake Schools went through the process of hiring a new superintendent. This year, the school district will once again be in the position of hiring an administrator as it seeks a new elementary principal.

At its Monday meeting, the Maple Lake School Board discussed the process it will use to hire a replacement for Dan Olberg, who has resigned to become principal of Lino Lakes Elementary in the Forest Lake Area School District.  Olberg, who was hired as Maple Lake’s elementary principal in 1999, said it will be hard to leave.

“Maple Lake has offered me five great years and I will always appreciate the opportunity to serve this district,” he said. “I will miss the students, staff, and the relationships that I have with our administration team. My wife and I are looking forward to being close to family members and the job possibilities that this move will create for both of us.”

Superintendent Mark Redemske said the position was posted on several websites less than a week ago and 18 applications have already been received, with at least 50 applications expected. Among the requirements for the position are a Minnesota Elementary Principal’s License, previous elementary teaching experience and past administrative experience is preferred.

On the committee to conduct the interview process will be Redemske and High School Principal Mary James, the seven members of the Elementary Leadership Team, Child Study Coordinator Barb Lhotka, the members of the School Board, and two parents.

Redemske said the application deadline will be on June 3, with interviews tentatively set up for June 9. “If everything goes well, we will offer the job and approve the hiring of a new principal at the June 14 board meeting,” Redemske said. “It’s an ambitious schedule, but I think it’s workable.”
