Legion baseball stays undefeated
After a week where they went 3-0, the Maple Lake Legion baseball team hosted Breck on Thursday, June 25. Maple Lake got out to a double-digit lead early in the game. Errors and mental mistakes allowed Breck back into the game, but the home team scored enough runs in the late innings to improve their record to 4-0 under coach Bobby Fobbe Jr.
In the top of the first, Breck's first three hitters were retired by starting pitcher Mitch Wurm, who struck out two. Maple Lake answered with one run in the bottom of the first when Aaron Rassat scored on a Luke Fobbe RBI single to rightfield. Wurm then struck out the side in the second to bring his total to five strikeouts through two innings. Maple Lake extended the lead by scoring three runs in the bottom of the second with RBIs from Jordan Kelm, Riley Decker, and Rassat.
After a scoreless top of the third by Wurm, Brian Redemske tacked on two more runs for Maple Lake when he belted a two-RBI double in the left-center gap to bring the score to 6-0. They continued their hot hitting in the fourth by adding four more runs with Nick Hudek and Cam Knudsen contributing RBIs to bring the lead to a seemingly insurmountable 10-0 through four innings.
But Breck wasn't about to give up as they scored seven runs on three Maple Lake errors and three hits off of Wurm in the fifth to bring the score to 10-7. After a scoreless bottom of the fifth, Breck added seven more runs over the next two innings to take the lead, 14-10.
Trailing by four runs in the seventh, Maple Lake cut the lead in half when Wurm delivered a two-out single that scored Pete Nordlie and Rassat. Decker then took the mound in the eighth for the home team and shut out the opponents to keep the score close.
In the bottom of the eighth Maple Lake regained the lead when they drew five walks and scored four runs off of errors to make the score 16-14. Knudsen then came in to close out the game on the mound in the ninth and did so effectively, allowing one hit and no runs, to secure the fourth win of the season for Maple Lake.
