Irish have strong showing at first meet

The first cross country meet of the year was a successful event for Maple Lake High School. Not only did the Irish host the event, but both the boys’ and girls’ teams posted strong showings on Sept. 2 during the 2010 Irish Invitational at Ney Park. 
In varsity competition, the Irish girls took fourth place and the boys’ team placed fifth. Maple Lake’s Greg Dorow came within a few seconds of taking the top spot in the boys’ meet. Dorow finished in second place with a time of 18:25, just four seconds behind the first place time of 18:21 by Troy Kovisto of Dassel-Cokato. Times in the boys’ race were slowed by a brief rain that fell just before the last runners crossed the finish line in the girls’ race. 
The Irish girls were led by Kristen Wohlrabe, who finished seventh with a time of 17:12. Winning the girls’ race was McKenzie Holt of SCC, with a first-place time of 15:50.
Following Wohlrabe for Maple Lake were Hannah Haegele in 18:58 for 20th place; Hannah Klug, 19:38, 27th; Maddie Gagnon, 21:05, 46th; Anna Thiele, 21:07, 48th; Alyssa Redemske, 21:18, 51st; and Maria Stokman, 21:34, 57th place.
Taking first in girls’ team competition was Dassel-Cokato with 56 points, followed by Holdingford, 115; Watertown-Mayer, 137; Maple Lake, 137; St. John’s, 148; Delano, 165; Eden Valley-Watkins, 170; Rockford, 214; and Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted with 242. Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa, Litchfield, Mara., Royalton and SCC had incomplete results.
Following Dorow in the boys’ race for the Irish were Ben Thiele, 20:06, 15th; Michael Thomas, 21:56, 36th; Danny Becker, 22:06, 38th; Evan Hertwig, 22:29, 46th; Kevin Salveson, 23:16, 53rd; and Nick Feikema, 25:51, 63rd.
Taking first in team competition for the varsity boys was Delano with 59 points, followed by Litchfield, 66; Dassel-Cokato, 81; Watertown-Mayer, 137; Maple Lake, 137; Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted, 177; Rockford, 192; and St. John’s, 380. Posting incomplete results were Holdingford, Eden Valley-Watkins, Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa; Mara., SCC and Royalton. 
The Irish junior high boys and girls each won the team competition. The Irish girls posted a score of 33, followed by Eden Valley-Watkins with 59, Royalton with 109 and Dassel- Cokato with 114. The Irish recorded four top-ten performances. Molly Graham won in a time of 10:26, followed by Kayla Hoistad, 10:54; Sydney Louis, 11:13; and Skyler Manka, 11:30.
Andrew Schonessen took third in junior high boys’ competition for Maple Lake with a time of 9:28, followed by Adam Latour, 9:49 in seventh place and Devin Deringer in ninth place with a time of 9:56.
In junior varsity competition, Tara Holmgren took fourth place for the Irish girls with a time of 20:55 and Cullin Gallagher took second for the Irish boys in a time of 20:59.
The Irish traveled to Rockford High School for an invitational on September 7 and will visit Delano for a meet on September 16.
