'Time is Now' for boys' basketball

by Jake Johnson
With the fall sports coming to a close the Maple Lake Irish basketball team began practice on Monday, November 22. Each year the team has a motto, chosen by Head Coach Tim Staloch, and this year’s is “Our Time is Now.”
“I wanted to get the players to understand that they have the opportunity for great things this year and also to realize that high school years go by very fast.  They need to work hard and enjoy each moment,” said Staloch.
The Irish got to work quickly by having only three days of practice before the annual “Toys for Tots” scrimmage held on November 28 in St. Cloud.  The team faced Litchfield, Stillwater, and Hutchinson.
“Having a scrimmage after only three days of practice is always interesting. The thing I was most pleased about is that we seemed to get better with each scrimmage. If we get better after each practice and each game we should be a very competitive basketball team,” Staloch said.
The team will be competing in the Central Minnesota Conference again this year with teams from Eden Valley-Watkins, Kimball, Howard Lake, Rockford, Holdingford, Pierz, and Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa.
“Our conference will be solid from top to bottom, but Belgrade- Brooten-Elrosa will probably offer the greatest challenges,” Staloch said. “They have all but one main player back from last year’s conference championship team. They have very good size and a lot of talent.”
Members of the 2010-2011 Irish boys’ basketball team include seniors, Jordan Goelz, Mitch Wurm, Wes Paumen, Justin Bidwell, and Ryan Hoeffer;  juniors, Forrest Coughlin, Brady Gagnon, Josh Hogan, Jake Johnson, Adam Lee, Joe Mooney, Logan Sawatzke, Zack Schaunaman, and Zach Stokman; sophomores, Donnie Mavencamp, Ben Hudek, Isaac Kotila, Drew Hansen, Dylan Kotilinek, Ben Winkelman, Brandon Prowatzke, Greg Dorow, Boston Fieldseth, and Joseph Lee; freshmen, Zach Johnson, Drew Siebert, Evan Hertwig, Nic Paumen, Bryce Carlson, Jake Schaunaman, Jay Elsenpeter, Landon Caughey, Wyatt Moeller, Trevor Borell, Nick Gapinski, Sullivan Graham, Gerald Marquette, Tyler Schmitz; and eighth grader, David Stokman.
