The Maple Lake Irish began the 2011 Central Minnesota Conference season against two of its toughest opponents, BBE and Pierz.  On Jan. 4, the Irish traveled to BBE where they battled hard against a big and experienced team that had the majority of its players returning from last year's conference championship team.
The Jaguars, who are used to high-scoring games, were contained by a solid man defense by the Irish which held them to only 20 points in the first half.
On the offensive end of the game, the Irish were cold and could not score consistently enough to keep up with BBE, eventually falling by a score of 59-41.
“Defensively we played okay, especially in the first half,” said Coach Tim Staloch. “Unfortunately, we turned the ball over too many times and shot very poorly."
The Irish were again led by senior Mitch Wurm who finished the game with 19 points and 9 rebounds.
