Boys’ basketball gets wins over Pierz, Holdingford

On Tuesday evening, Feb. 21, the Irish boys’ basketball team hosted the very tough Pierz Pioneers who are currently placed second in the Central Minnesota Conference.  
It was a thriller from the tip-off to the final horn as the Irish defeated the Pioneers by three points, 66-63.  
“The team played very well together,” said Head Coach Tim Staloch. “I am proud of the composure the players showed down the stretch.”
Both teams played well, which kept the game close throughout all 36 minutes.  The score at halftime was 33-31, Irish lead.  
In the second half the story was the same up until the final closing minutes, when Maple Lake stretched the lead to seven points, 52-45.

But with no doubt the Pioneers were not going to back down and made a run of their own that gave them the lead by 2 points with a minute to go.  

After a steal and a reaching foul, senior Jake Johnson knocked down both free throws, tying the game at 61. Following was a missed shot from Pierz, giving the Irish the chance to regain the lead.  After a high screen and roll was set, freshman David Stokman kicked the ball to junior Donnie Mavencamp, who would sink the three-point shot to put the Irish up three.
