Irish clinch 1st CMC baseball title

On Monday, May 7, the Irish opened up the week by traveling to Kimball to battle the Cubs in a conference game, the first of four this week. The Irish dominated the entire game by putting up 18 runs to the Cubs’ 3, earning themselves another victory. Maple Lake will have the chance to make history if they win all four games this week by earning the conference championship. Maple Lake wasted no time in this game, scoring five runs in the top of the first inning. The team batted through the entire order, with only two players not reaching the base paths. In the seventh inning the team put up another seven runs, sealing the victory completely. Major contributers of the game were senior Brian Redemske who hit the team’s first home run of the season, seniors Jake Johnson and Derek Rachel, junior Donnie Mavencamp, and freshman Cal Redemske also recorded three hits each. On the mound for the Irish was senior Zach Stokman who went the distance. He allowed three earned runs, coming off of six hits, two walks and a hit batter; he also struck five men out.

On Tuesday, May 8, the Irish traveled to Winsted to take on the neighboring rivals of Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted. It was a fight to the very end but Maple Lake ended out on top by a score of 8-5. By the third inning of the game, the Irish found themselves trailing behind the Lakers 5-2. This soon changed in the top of the fourth when Maple Lake put five runs up on the board, giving them a 7-5 lead. The rally began with freshman Cal Redemske, who hit a single, followed by a double from senior Dedrek Berndtson. Up next was junior Bosten Fieldseth who picked up an RBI after hitting a single. Continuing the momentum was sophomore Zach Johnson who also picked up an RBI after following with another single. Bringing up the top of the order, senior Brian Redemske found the gap for a double, bringing Fieldseth and Johnson around to score. After a groundout to short from junior Donnie Mavencamp and a walk from senior Jake Johnson, senior Derek Rachel hit a single to score Redemske from third, which concluded the scoring for the Irish this inning. In the seventh inning Rachel added a little bit more insurance with a solo home run, stretching the lead to three runs.
