Irish girls’ cross country earns conference crown

Climbing into the bus on the afternoon of Tuesday, Oct. 16, the runners on the Maple Lake cross country teams didn’t know what to expect. Some were excited, while others were nervous. They were headed to Pierz for a meet of which for some, decided their “fate.” But all they could do was try their best and run their hardest. And that’s exactly what they did. The girls ended up as Central Minnesota Conference champions, with the boys not far behind. The girls’ varsity team finished in 1st place, conquering Holdingford by a mere 2 points. The Irish girls were filled with emotion. “We were super excited when we found out we won,” said varsity runner Blair Stewig. “We were also surprised because we thought we lost by one point but it turned out we won by two! We all hugged the Holdingford team and everyone on our own team. It was the best sports moment for me because it was only the second time that this has happened.” Junior varsity runners joined in the celebration on the girls’ victory. “The girls’ varsity race ended with a lot of anticipation because our team and Holdingford finished very close together so it was really exciting to hear Maple Lake announced as first-place winners,” said junior varsity runner Lori Elsenpeter.
