On Tuesday, December 28th, the Irish traveled to Upsala to take on a tough Class A team, the Bertha-Hewitt Bears.
Like the Bears, Maple Lake began the game in a zone defense. Unfortunately, Bertha-Hewitt hit five first-half three-pointers, deeming the zone to be ineffective.
“We struggled to identify shooters and they capitalized early on in the first half,” said Head Coach Adam Ronnenberg.
The change didn’t seem to matter as the Bears kept the pedal to the metal and led by 23 at the half, 15-38.
“The early lead took us by surprise and we were never able to recover,” said Ronnenberg.
The second half was better as the Irish came out more intense, but the deficit was too much to overcome. The Irish lost to the Bears 34-57.
Although they lost the first game of the tournament, Coach Ronnenberg was optimistic about improving. “Fundamentally, we have had better days and will look forward to getting better in that department,” he said.
