Anyone looking at the Maple Lake gymnastics team in section competition on Saturday, February 19, would have found a bunch of very nervous, yet excited, girls.
“This is one of the most stressful meets, partly because there are so many people,” explained Heather Schlueter. “But I guess that also makes it more exciting.”
The meet took place in Watertown, where the team ended up rocking the event.
“This was a great meet for the team,” said Coach Kaitlyn Helmbrecht. “We finished the season with a team high for the year.”
That high score was 133.15, which put them in 4th place out the the nine teams. It was an extremely close meet, with 1st place going to Delano which totaled 137.9. This meant there were less than five points standing between Maple Lake and first place.
Nina Simonette scored highest on vault with 8.9. Courtney Couette scored 8.875. Bonnie Jude was behind her with 8.65. Then was Jordan Sifferle totaling 8.55. Schlueter earned 8.3.
When it came to beam, Jude and Couette were Maple Lake's stars, when they both got 8.425. Schlueter also did well by scoring 7.875 and Simonette was just a fraction behind her with 7.85. Sifferle was given a score of 7.7.
Bars was the next event. Couette earned a 7.925 on them. Schlueter totaled 7.725. Sifferle was not far off with 7.65. Then came Courtney Pribyl with 7.475. Jude scored 6.75.
