Irish softball team earns three wins

On Thursday, April 29, the Maple Lake Irish softball team traveled to Pierz for a double-header against the Pioneers.
The top of the first led off with Brooke Decker hitting a single, followed by Sydney Knudsen, also with a single. The Irish took an early 1-0 lead over the Pioneers when Brittany Negley’s sacrifice out allowed Decker to score.
The bottom of the first was dominated by Decker’s pitching as the Pioneers went three-up and three-down by striking out.
The second inning began with Shelby Rachel being walked, followed by Holly Goelz getting on base because she was hit by the pitch. Up next was Hannah Klug with a single, allowing Rachel to score. Then a double hit by Decker sent both Goelz and Klug home. The Pioneer pitcher then walked Negley. A single by Ashley Gries advanced the girls around the bases. Negley was also able to score by the end of the top of the second. The Irish expanded their lead 6-0.
Some tough pitching by Decker in the bottom of the second once again drew three strikeouts.
In the third inning, the tables turned a bit, as the Irish were not able to score any runs and the Pioneers began to close the gap, ending the inning with a new score of 6-2.
In the fourth inning, two doubles by Negley and Gries allowed Negley to reach home, bringing the score up to 7-2, while the Pioneers once again fell to Decker’s pitching.
