John W. F. Canfield, Sr., age 94, of Fairhaven died Friday, June 24, 2011, at Hilltop Care Center in Watkins.
Funeral service was held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 29, 2011, at Dingmann Funeral Care Chapel, Annandale, with Pastor Steven Rowland officiating. Honorary pallbearers were his great-grandchildren. They were the light of his life! Carolyn Wicks provided the music for the service. Burial was held at 10 a.m., Thursday, June 30, 2011, at Fairhaven Cemetery in Fairhaven. Friends called from 5-7 p.m., Tuesday, and one hour prior to the service on Wednesday, both at Dingmann Funeral Care Chapel, Annandale. A prayer service was held 7 p.m., Tuesday, at the funeral home. Memorials are preferred to Camp Friendship, Annandale, or Hilltop Care Center, Watkins.
John William Francis Canfield Sr. was born on May 1, 1917, in Ericson, Nebraska, to the late Palmer Levi and Mabel Pearl (Ainsworth) Canfield. He was the eldest of 12 children. He married Sarah Jane Lundy on October 2, 1937, in Knoxville, Iowa. John and Sarah had six children and lived in Lincoln, Nebraska, for several years, before moving to Minnesota in 1972. John was a carpenter and worked at Camp Friendship as the construction foreman; he built a number of the camp cabins and buildings.  John and Sarah lived in Fairhaven for several years where John enjoyed maintaining a big garden and fishing in the area lakes.  
He is survived by his sons and daughter, Richard Sr. of Dallas, TX, George Sr. “Butch” of Oxford, NC, Joan (Robert) Butler of Coleman, FL; brothers and sisters, George (Madelynne) of Blackrick, OH, Bonnie Scott of Grand Island, NE, Rex (Blanche) of Grand Island, NE, Eldon (Phyllis) of Dannasbrug, NE; 18 grandchildren; 6 step-grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; 10 step-great-grandchildren; 7 great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Sarah; parents; three sons, John Jr., Howard Sr. and Henry; one grandson; four great-grandchildren; two brothers and five sisters.
