Lakers get win over Mound, drop 2

The Maple Lake Lakers lost a squeaker to Howard Lake on Sunday. Trailing 4-3 in the top of the ninth, things were looking up for the Lakers when Tyler Decker opened the inning with a base hit and Riley Decker reached first on a sacrifice bunt that was bobbled by reliever Shane Kahn. Mitch Wurm hit a ground ball to shortstop to force Riley, and two more easy outs ended Laker hopes.
Nate Johnson scored an unearned run for the Lakers in the first. With one out he singled and took second when Chad Raiche walked. He came home on a wild throw past second base when the Howard Lake shortstop tried for a double play. The Lakers narrowed the score to 3-2 in the third when Luke Fobbe scored from third on Chad Raiche’s ground-out.
The home team put together a big three-run second inning. Andy Gagnon doubled and scored on Matt Donovan’s base hit. Chris Hardie and Jesse Berg singled to load the bases for Ryan Long, who drove in two runs with a double down the left-field line. The Orphans got what turned out to be the winning run in the sixth on Long’s bases-loaded sacrifice fly to shallow center field. Berg did not score for the Orphans but had three hits in four at bats.
Orphan starter Ben Borrell ran out of gas in the seventh. With one out, Cody Decker walked, Riley Decker got a base hit, and after another out, Brian Redemske walked to load the bases.
