Sartell 4, Lakers 3

Bobby Fobbe was the big story of Fan Appreciation Day held at Irish Stadium on July 22. Asked to come out of retirement by manager Chad Raiche to fill an open roster spot, Fobbe seemed doomed to limited duty as a pinch hitter and bench presence. He hadn’t thrown a pitch for the Lakers since 2008. But against the Muskies, he entered in relief of starter Brian Russell with a 3-1 count and two outs in the third inning and retired the batter on a ground ball. From there he went on to pitch four scoreless innings to hold on to the Lakers’ 3-1 lead. In the top of the ninth, Sartell, the number one seed in their region, battled back with three runs in the top of the ninth off reliever Mitch Wurm and ended up with a 4-3 win. Sartell is a Class C team in the Lakewood League. Dusty Decker scored the first Laker run in the first inning on Mitch Wurm’s base hit. Luke Fobbe scored a run in the fifth. He advanced on two infield outs and scored on Wurm’s base hit. Cody Decker knocked a 350-foot double to the left-center field fence to lead off the sixth. Marcus Zahn singled and Riley Decker walked to load the bases. Graham Brown walked to force in Cody with what turned out to be the final Laker run of the afternoon. Failing to get the clutch hits, the Lakers stranded 12 runners. The Lakers finish the season with an overall record of 19-9.
