Getting a break from traveling, the Irish held the Maple Lake Lions Coed Relay Track meet on Thursday, April 28, where they hosted numerous teams, including Zimmerman, Rockford and St. John’s Prep.
“The meet went excellent! We just missed first place, but all-in-all the kids had fun with the meet and the nice weather,” said Head Coach Ben Youngs.
This type of meet consists of all relay races where girls and boys compete separately and together.
“Relay meets can’t take the place of the big meets, but it’s nice to mix things up and do something different,” said Youngs. “It was tough, though, because there were more teams than lanes which made a few races tricky – sometimes we had to squeeze three teams in the two outside lanes.”
Also adding another twist to the meet, a coaches relay race was held for fun.
“The relay went well,” Youngs said. “Paul Fouquette, Marty Kiebel, Brad Salveson and I took second to Rockford and finished with no injuries.”
Taking initiative, hurdlers Courtney Pribyl, Nina Simonette, Courtney Couette, and Haley Awker started the meet off strong, scoring team points with their first- and second-place finishes. Following in the steps of their teammates, Jenny Puncochar, Courtney Pribyl, Rachel Latour and Brooke Toedter also took first place in the 800-meter medley.
