Wrestlers win conference title

Lightning wrestlers added another successful week to their season, capturing the Wright County Conference title, going  2-0 in duals and picking up another first-place finish in individual tournament action.
Annandale-Maple Lake had a chance to spend most of the week preparing for two big matches Friday night, Feb. 4.
Many Maple Lake, Annandale, and A-ML alumni showed up at Annandale High School to watch the Lightning battle the Watertown-Mayer Royals for the Wright County Conference crown and the Big Lake Hornets for Section 6, Class 2A seeding preference.
The week didn’t end there as coaches, wrestlers, managers and cheerleaders boarded a bus early Saturday morning, Feb. 5, to trek to Mankato for the Mankato East Cougar Invitational.
The Lightning took on W-M in the first dual Friday night. The Royals, who are also in the “Lean and Mean” section of the Guillotine wrestling team rankings, clipped the Lightning last season. A-ML looked to reverse their fortunes this year and claim the conference title outright.
The match got underway with the Royals picking up a pin at 103 pounds. Joe Mosley bumped up to 112 and picked up a 1:43 pin to get the Lightning on the board.
A-ML’s seventh-ranked Jordan Hanan added six with a fall at 119. Mosley’s pin started a bit of a roll for the Lightning as Matt Fuller (125) won with a technical fall, Alex Couette (130) earned a pin and Tyler Pipo posted a 1:06 fall.
