The benefits of being the home to a company with a national reputation are growing as Bernatello’s Pizza marked 25 years in Maple Lake ... The first of the Music and Marketplace events on each Saturday evening in July began with a performance by the MLHS Marching Band ... The band returned from a trip to Florida in time to appear in the Annandale Fourth of July Parade ... The Maple Lake Lakers hosted the league All-Star game and were represented by Riley Decker, Cody Decker, Graham Brown, and Sam Marsnik ... The Maple Lake 14U softball team won a spot in the national tournament in Terre Haute, IN ... The Maple Lake School Board approved the last bid needed for construction of new community ball fields. Bids were: excavation and grading, Dennis Fehn Gravel and Excavating of Albertville; fencing, Town and Country Fence, Brooklyn Park, $71,000; landscaping, Terra Services, Lakeland, $39,000; well and irrigation, $32,613 ... The School Board also welcomed new High School Principal Andrew Almos, who began his new position on July1 after the retirement of former principal Mary James ... The home of Randy and Diane Troppman at 336 80th St. NW was heaving damaged by fire ... Lake Region Co-op backed in a big crowd as are residents flocked to the Grand Opening of the expanded facilities on Highway 55. Winning to top prize of a Weber Genesis stainless steel gas grill was Lois Kaczrowski of Monticello ... The free movie to be hosted by the city of Maple Lake was rained out for the third time ... Matt Schneider, the younger brother of Christopher Schneider, an MLHS junior who died in a car accident in 2003, won the bass tournament named in Christopher’s honor. Matt and his partner, Ryan Holt of Monticello, hauled in the maximum catch of six fish with a weight of 14 lbs., 1 oz. ... Two big storms pounded Central Minnesota with high winds, hail and possible tornados as buildings were damgaged, trees were blown down and downed power lines were reported ... The Minnesota Court of Appeals ruled against Wright County’s appeal of an administrative order issued by the Department of Labor and Industry which directed the county to top the issuing of building permits in Corinna Township ... Leaders of a community playground effort conducted a ground-breaking for a two-year effort to build a playground in Silver Creek ... The City of Maple Lake reached a settlement with contractors over the replacement of deteriorating concrete in the downtown area ... The Minneapolis Aquatennial was the final event for 2008 Miss Maple Lake Brittany Gries ... The Maple Lake Legion Baseball team went well into postseason play and ended their season with an 11-4 record ... Senior Connections celebrated 10 year in Maple Lake with a celebration and prizes at the city park ... A big crowd of local and state officials gathered for a groundbreaking that signed the start of a sewer line project that would connect Maple Lake with the new Annandale-Maple Lake-Howard Lake Wastewater Treatment Plant.

Maple Lake’s oldest family-owned business ended its 75th year of operations when Jude Vending and Advantage Paper operations were purchased by Bernicks’ Pepsi of St. Cloud ... The Maple Lake Lakers hosted section playoffs in Maple Lake and came within one game of heading to the state tournament and a 19-9 record ...  The fourth time was finally the charm when more than 130 people enjoyed a free children’s movie shown on a giant inflatable screen at the city park ... The McBrady family of Maple Lake hosted a big event for the Zambian Children’s “Fund and raised more than $11,000 for the home coordinated by Carol McBrady for homeless children in Zambia ... Maria Parsons opened an occassional sale shop, “Not So Hidden Treasurers,” at the Den in downtown Maple Lake ... The replacement of concrete was wrapped up on Birch Avenue in time for the Maple Lake Days of Old Festival ... A car driven by Reece Bregenzer, 33, of Silver Creek, crashed into the Up the Creek Bar and Grill in Silver Creek, doing extensive damage to the building and seriously injuring Bregenzer ... A funnel cloud was photographed over Maple Lake as numerous tornadoes and funnel clouds were confirmed during storms ingited by the hot and steamy weather ... Maple Lake Elementary was ranked second in the state for th e amount of money raised in the Box Tops for Education program ... The T. J. Potter Women’s Softball Team won the state Class DD Women’s Slowpitch title ... Bob & the Beachcombers headlined the Days of Old celebration in downtown Maple Lake ... Jeff Colbenson, 34, of Maple Lake, died in the crash of a small plane just six days before his wedding to Beth Blizil of Maple Lake. Colbenson was on a wedding-week flight with his friend and pilot, Brett Johnson, who also died in the Clearwater Township crash ... A unit in the trailer park on Oak Avenue that was home to Joe Silva was destroyed in a fire that appeared to start from a candle burning in a bedroom.

The Maple Lake Library was the runner-up for cities with population from 1,000 to 4,999 in the Reinventing Minnesota-2010 Minnesota Community Pride Competition ... New staff starting the new school year at Maple Lake Public Schools and St. Timothy’s School were Jessica McGraw, Belle Nelson, Annie Jost, Nathaniel Nordberg, Susan Wilde, Nichole Rengel, Theresa Heimkes and Andrew Almos ... Brandon Merten of Maple Lake was the winner of the Prop Clock Raffle conducted during the annual Fly-In at the Maple Lake Airport ... Congresswoman Michele Backmann made a visit to Maple Lake and was provided with a tour of the PACE Industries/Product Tech Division facilities in the Jude Industrial Park ... In the Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) report, the Maple Lake School District, Maple Lake High School and Maple Lake Elementary each failed to make AYP for one of the school sub-groups identified in the testing ... After nearly a decade of effort to plan and overcome obstacles for the Annandale-Maple Lake-Howard Lake Wastewater Treatment Plant, Maple Lake became the last of the three cities to go online at the new plant ... Sarah O’Loughlin returned to Maple Lake after a tour of duty in Iraq ... Minnesota Twins pitcher Scott Baker signed autographs for fans at the first Maple Lake Irish Diamonds and Dreams event to raise funds for the new community ballfields ... State Rep. Mark Buesgens of Jordan was arrested in Maple Lake Township on a charge of driving while intoxicated ... Volunteers gathered at Centennial Playground to give the 20-year-old playground at Maple Lake Elementary a new lease on life ... Perfect weather was provided for the St. Timothy’s Fall Festival, where Barbara VanLith won the Big Ticket raffle prize of $1,500 ... Decorative trees were finally planted in downtown Maple Lake as part of the 2008 Birch Avenue Reconstruction Project ... Maple Lake Wind & Spirits was selected by the city council as the name of the new liquor store ... Selected for the 2010 Maple Lake High School Homecoming Court were seniors Wes Paumen, Justin Bidwell, Cam Knudsen, Jordan Golez, Sammy Hollencamp, Alex Couette, Ashley Blizil, Annie Schwede, Dez Decker and Ashley Hertwig.

Annie Schwede and Cameron Knudsen were crowned as the MLHS Homecoming queen and king ... Kevin Smith was presented with the Terrel D. Merriman Community Services Award at the AFL-CIO State Convention in Bloomington for his volunteer efforts on behalf of the Maple Lake Library ... The Sugar Lake Association was named as the Lake Association of the Year by the non-profit, Minnesota Waters ... The Maple Lake Library produced a very successful “Hollywood Nights” fundraiser, doubling its profit total to $16,000 in the event’s second year ... The juniors defeated the seniors in both the Powderpuff and He-Man Volleyball contests, the sophomores won the best parade float competition, and the Irish won their athletic contests in perfect weather for a very successful week of Homecoming activities ... Six candidates: Don Grant, Dennis Klug, Shelly Liljequist, Brad Neutz, Richard Thomas and Roger Upcraft were running for three seats on the Maple Lake School Board ... MLHS senior Megan Dramdahl was named as a commended student in the 2011 National Merit Scholarship Program ... Nearly $40,000 in equipment was stolen in a weekend theft at J. Anderson Electric in Maple Lake ... The dream of a playground in Silver Creek became a reality with the completion of a playground produced in a partnership between Silver Creek Community Church, Immanuel Lutheran Church, Silver Creek Township and community volunteers.

Election results returned unopposed city incumbents Mayor Mike O’Loughlin and council members Deb Geyen and Shar  Dircks to office. Brad Neutz, Richard Thomas and Shelly Liljequist won seats on the Maple Lake School Board. Maple Lake native Tad Jude was the winner over 23 other candidates for an open position as the 10th District Court 3 judge. Other area office winners were District 10 Senator Amy Koch, District 19A Representative Bruce Anderson, District 18 Senator Scott Newman, District 18B Representative Dean Urdhal and District 5 County Commissioner Dick Mattson ... Larry Gordon, owner and operator of Larry Gordon Construction, died at the age of 65 ... The third grade students of Beth Haglin were selected to read Extra Credit questions for the television game show “Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader” ... The Irish volleyball team won the subsection title, but fell to Delano in the section final ... The Irish football team earned the first trip to the state football tournament in school history with dominating 48-24 section victory over Mayer Lutheran ... The Maple Lake High School Drama Department presented two on-act fall plays: “Wendy’s Tale” and “slasreveR neveS” ... Steve and Deb Allen, parents of Marine Sgt. Chad Allen, who died in 2007 in the service of his country, provided a moving tribute to their son and other fallen heroes during the annual Veteran’s Day Program ... The first snowfall of the season had a big impact on Maple Lake, causing the first round state football game set for Lakeville to be moved back two days and relocated to the Metrodome ... The Irish battled the highly favored Triton Cobras in the Metrodome game and fell just short of a big upset by a score of 21-28 ... The City of Maple Lake opened a new 5,000 square foot liquor store earlier than expected in a building constructed just west of the Lake Region facilities on Highway 55 ... Martin Castro of LMC Photography won a first place award and a Judge’s Choice award in the Twin Cities Professional Photographers Association contest ... School staff members honored at the Leadership in Education Excellence Awards were teachers Donna Wurm, Amy Kosloski, Tanya Malwitz and Sue Nelson.

Maple Lake resident Tom Clarke, a veteran of the emergency rescue operation after the 9/11 terrorist attacks, is receiving assistance from Eric Clapton in an effort to create three memorial guitars to remember 9/11 rescue workers who lost their lives at Ground Zero ... Another big weekend snow didn’t stop a weekend of Christmas activities, including the annual Christmas in Maple Lake where a big crowd of kids visited with Santa and Mrs. Claus ... MLHS senior Mitch Wurm recorded his 1,000th basketball point as only the sixth Irish athlete to hit that milestone ... The Tree of Hope, an annual state-wide effort to collect toys for children in hospitals over Christmas, was moved to the Maple Lake Airport ... Wright County completed its second ballot recount in two years, with Mark Dayton gaining two votes and Tom Emmer losing one in the close contest for governor ... The Maple Lake School Board honored its three departing board members: Dennis Klug, Connie Munstenteiger and Greg Mooney ... Continuing a trend of weekend storms, a blizzard that caused the collapse of the Metrodome in Minneapolis brought 10 inches of snow to Maple Lake ... The Irish boys basketball team won the championship at the St. John’s holiday tournament ... Local songwriter George Meissner had one of his songs included in the album “The Gift of Christmas” ... New Wright County Sheriff Joe Hagerty took the oath of office after the retirement of Sheriff Gary Miller ... The home of Casey Moline at 570 Albion Place was judged as this year’s winner of the Maple Lake Chamber of Commerce Holiday in Lights contest ... Demolition began on the old city wastewater treatment plant as the last step in the process to connect to the new Annandale-Maple Lake-Howard Lake Wastewater Treatment Plant.
