Pennies for Patients raises nearly $3,900
Maple Lake students are using spare change to beat cancer: $3,882 in spare change to be exact.
Students at Maple Lake Elementary and Maple Lake High School spent Jan. 13 to 24 talking about leukemia and lymphoma while collecting coins and dollars for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Pennies for Patients program.
MLE set a $400 goal, or about $1 per student. The Friends of Rachel Club compiled a calendar for staff and students to follow each day throughout the two weeks to reach the goal. Each student received a yellow Pennies for Patients box to collect coins and each classroom was assigned a student who is either battling blood cancer or is a survivor. Elementary students and staff were also invited to pay a dollar to wear a hat to school at the end of the first week.
