Richard Vandergon, Norwood-Young America

 

Richard Arlan “Rick” Vandergon, age 63, of Norwood – Young America, formerly of Chaska, died Wednesday, May 14, 2014, at his home, surrounded by his family.
Funeral Service was at 11 a.m. May 17, at Prairie Community Church, 9145 Eden Prairie Road, Eden Prairie, with the Rev. John Ward officiating. The visitation was Friday, May 16, from 4 –8 p.m. and also one hour prior to the service, also at the church. 
Rick was born Aug. 8, 1950, in St. Cloud, to Richard and Thelma (Kuiper) Vandergon, the oldest of five children. He was baptized and confirmed at the Silver Creek Community Church, Silver Creek. He attended school in Maple Lake, and graduated from Maple Lake High School in 1968. He served in the United States Army from 1969 – 1971 during the Vietnam Conflict. On July 18, 1970, Rick married Glenna Maikkula in Plymouth. Rick worked as an optician for 45 years, last employed at On-Site Vision in Golden Valley. Rick and Glenna lived in Maple Lake for five years prior to moving to Chaska where they resided for 34 years. He loved music, crosswords, books, gardening, flowers and exploring. He especially loved spending time with his family and grandchildren.
Rick was preceded in death by his father, Richard.
Survivors include his loving wife, Glenna; children, Joy (Dave) Gess, of Big Lake; Matt, of Chaska; Hope (Nick) Kotsonas, of Chanhassen; Josh (Kathy), of Cologne; grandchildren, Alexis, Morgan, Connor, Jacob, Hannah, Keagan and Isabel; mother, Thelma (Vern Anderson) Vandergon, of Maple Lake; siblings, Dean (Marne), of Greeley, Colo.; Dan (Peggy), of Maple Lake; Gwen (Wayne) Johnson, of Monticello; Brenda (Doug) Hagel, of Maple Lake; many nieces and nephews.
Funeral arrangements are with the Bertas Funeral Home of Chaska.
