J&J Marine: Ready to rock your boat this summer

J&J Marine can be found four miles west of Annandale on Highway 55.

Members of J&J's crew gather aboard a 2014 Palm Beach Pontoon, one of many onsite in the dealership’s expansive showroom. At J&J Marine, service is Job One, whether it’s helping you find the watercraft of your dreams or maintaining a vessel you already own.
“That’s our big thing around here: service,” owner Jim Buranen said.

Minnesota proud

Located about four miles west of Annandale on Highway 55, J&J specializes in Minnesota-made lines, featuring  Alumacraft fishing boats, proudly produced in St. Peter since 1946, and Palm Beach pontoons, which have been manufactured in New Ulm since 1957. Anglers are invited to cast a glance at the many Alumacraft fishing boats on display, including the new Voyager and Escape models.

As 2013’s Dealer of the Year, J&J is amply prepared to help prospective pontoonists explore their best options, with numerous 2014 models in stock and on display in a comfortable, spacious showroom.

To properly propel your craft, the company has carried Mercury, Yamaha and Evinrude motors for many years, and J&J is now a Suzuki dealer, as well.

J&J also carries Porta-Docks and lifts. Located in Dassel, Port-a-Dock has been building moveable aluminum docks and lifts since 1966. One of Porta-Dock’s top three dealers for more than 15 years running, J&J is proud to support yet another Minnesota-grown business.

Always on hand for seasonal needs, J&J is your go-to source for dock and lift removal, as well as indoor and outdoor boat storage and winterization. Secure, fenced storage space for more than 400 boats is available, with options to store either indoors or out.

Last, but not least, are J&J’s factory-trained technicians. Ably assisting area marine enthusiasts in keeping their boats afloat, J&J’s techs maintain and repair all makes and models of watercraft, bringing care, precision and decades’ worth of experience to the task.

“They’re all master technicians,” Buranen said. “They all have been in it 20-some years.”

A fun run

A former machine shop mechanic whose start in the marine trade began nearly 30 years ago with some part-time dock and lift work, Buranen said, “It’s been fun. It’s been quite a run.”

A recent open house that coincided with a spring snow storm was well-attended despite the wintry weather, and he and his wife, Tami, extend their thanks to all who braved the elements to attend.

Silver Creek Township residents since 1987, the Buranens have two sons: Brandon, 29, and 23-year-old Travis, who is credited for the catchy company slogan, “We Rock Your Boat.” Each has a full-time role in J&J’s seasoned workforce, made up of nine fulltime employees, along with the additional five- to six-man seasonal crew required for the installation of some 350 docks this spring.

In its present location since 2005, J&J stands next door to the former gas station that had been the dealership’s home since 1996. Everything – from product line, to inventory, to storage – has changed in recent years, Buranen said, and to further reflect the lifestyles and entertainment needs of today’s modern boaters, he’s increased his inventory of aqua-recreational products. If the Maui Mat – a roll-out floating platform that tethers boatside to support swimmers and sunbathers – turns out to be your must-have nautical novelty this year, J&J will be happy to provide you with a nice selection from which to choose.

A commitment to stewardship

With an eye to the future, J&J continues to expand its horizons beyond boats and boating accessories, adding other products and services to its repertoire over recent years. Hustler zero-turn mowers are now offered to J&J customers, as are Yamaha generators, rated among the best in the business for being quiet, powerful, portable and for meeting the strictest environmental standards. Farther in from the shoreline, snowplowing and yard maintenance services are available, too, and as a new service this summer, J&J will provide boat-fueling, to boot.

And with a heart for this area’s sky-blue waters, J&J does its part as a corporate citizen, working with area lake associations and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources to preserve our lakes – and the enjoyment they afford us – for generations to come. A leader in the fight against invasive species, J&J provides local boating enthusiasts with an opportunity to make certain their watercraft are free of contaminants by providing a hot-water boat and trailer wash on its premises.

“They’re all our lakes,” Buranen says. “So we want to keep ’em clean.”
