Lakers prevail in 12-11 Region playoff win

Dusty Decker slides home for a run against the Cokato Kings.

No. 7 Todd Fuller celebrates with his teammates after crossing home plate against the Cokato Kings.

The Maple Lake Lakers punched their ticket to the state tournament last week with wins over the Cokato Kings and the Dassel-Cokato Saints.  Those wins are enough to guarantee the Lakers at least the third seed in state for Region 12.  Guarantees were hard to come by as close games and upsets set the tone for the first week of play-offs.  Number two Howard Lake was upset by number seven Maple Plain 12-7 in the second game of the tournament while every game after that was decided by two runs or less.  If you missed the action last week you are in luck because games start up again on Wednesday night in Maple Lake.

Maple Lake opened the Region 12C tournament with a big win against Cokato Wednesday night.  Jeremy Schmidt got the start for the Lakers and struck out two in the first inning to set the tone of the game.  The Maple Lake offense got going in the second when a Dusty Decker single started an eight-batter rally that left the home team up 3-0.  The Lakers followed that inning up with a four-run third that brought two Cokato pitching changes.  Up seven in the sixth, Maple Lake piled on five more and held the Kings in the seventh to end the game early.  Todd Fuller hit two doubles and Mitch Wurm hit a triple to drive in two runs late in the game.
