The Maple Lake boys basketball team won their own pre-holiday tournament last week by handily defeating both Mayer-Lutheran and Foley.
The Irish started off the two-day event with an 82-65 win over Mayer-Lutheran, on Thursday, Dec. 18. On Friday, Dec. 19, they went on to defeat Foley, 68-39 for the championship.
“It was fun to see the players after the games smiling and wearing their tournament champion t-shirts,” head coach Tim Staloch said after Friday night’s game.
The entire team contributed Thursday against the Royals. The Irish jumped to a quick lead and only lengthened it as the game went on. By the end of the first half the home team was up 43-28.
The lead allowed some of the bench to get some “well deserved” extended minutes, Staloch said.
In total, 12 different Irish players scored.
