July
“I finally got to preach as a ‘real pastor,’” the Rev. Culynn Curtis joked about his first Sunday back at Holy Cross Lutheran Church after being ordained. . . Ground has been broken and the countdown has begun for the opening of a Dollar General Store in Maple Lake. The store is slated to open at 800 Hwy. 55 W., at the corner of the highway and Spruce Street, in about a year. . .Empty storefronts in downtown Maple Lake could one day be filled with art shops, studios or other niche businesses and three property owners took one step toward that goal with a cooperative open house on Saturday. The event was the result of meetings hosted by the Maple Lake Development Group, a committee of the Maple Lake Chamber of Commerce that is working with local property and business owners to come up with ideas to attract more businesses to the downtown area. “Male Lake can be a wonderful area for affordable rent for artists in need of studio or retail space,” Development Group member Tricia Manuel said. . .Work is being done at four local intersections to make future improvements easier to complete. On Monday and Tuesday, the water main and storm sewer were replaced at the intersection of Maple Avenue and Wright County Road 7, also known as Division Street. Water was shut off for businesses and residences. . .Hundreds of people streamed into Irish Stadium before the Maple Lake Lakers took on the Loretto Larks. Their purpose was to support and raise money for the family of Trevor Pribyl, who was first diagnosed with a brain stem tumor three years ago. That goal was achieved as more than $12,500 was raised. “I’m very proud of our community,” said Tonya Klug, one of the organizers of the event. “I couldn’t believe the generosity.” Trevor’s mom, Rachel Pribyl, couldn’t believe it either. . .Wright County experienced an outage of 911 emergency services lines on Saturday. Eight firefighters began staffing the Maple Lake Fire Department at 1:50 p.m. while the 911 emergency number was out of service. . .After more than six months of debate, argument and questions, the River Rider transit system officially went dark on June 30. . .Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton has declared a state of emergency in 51 counties due to flooding that began June 11. The state of emergency issued on June 19 and extended 30 days on June 23 initially included 35 counties. Dayton added 15 counties, including Wright County, to the list on July 9. . .For the third time, Dale Glader of Maple Wood, has won the Christoper Schneider Bass Fishing Tournament, this time with Travis Nordling, of Annandale. The two reeled in six fish totaling 17.22 pounds during the 10th installment of the memorial fishing tournament on Saturday. . . A new fixed-base operator will soon be providing aircraft rentals, flight training and maintenance, with the possibility of mechanic training in the future, at the Maple Lake Municipal Airport.
