School year will start September 8

At its most recent meeting, Monday, July 13, the Maple Lake School Board voted against changing the previously-set 2015-2016 calendar. As a result of a bill passed during the legislative special session, school districts now may start school on September 1 for the 2015-2016 school year. The district strives to have a calendar similar to that of the Wright Tech Center, which will begin classes September 8. Annandale has some construction taking place that allows that district to start on August 31, and Litchfield previously approved a September 1 start date if allowed through the special session. Checking with all the other member districts of Meeker and Wright Special Education Cooperative (MAWSECO) and Wright Tech Center, Redemske learned that all – Big Lake, Buffalo, Dassel-Cokato, Delano, Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted, Monticello, Rockford and Saint Michael-Albertville – are adhering to the September 8 start date. Changing to an earlier start date would allow only one additional day off during Christmas break and would release students just one day earlier at the end of the school year. It was generally agreed that sticking with the original calendar would also avoid much unnecessary confusion for all.
