Teamwork will be the strategy of the Maple Lake girls cross country team as runners prepare for the upcoming season. With the loss of Sommer Carlson, the most decorated female distance runner in the program’s history, there will be only one stand-out runner left to guide them.
Halle Geyen returns with three state meet appearances under her belt to lead and keep the close-knit team tied together. For years Carlson and Geyen were the top two Irish runners, often finishing near the front of the race.
“It will be even more important for our varsity girls to pack run and have the fourth and fifth runners up near our top girls,” coach Ben Youngs said. “That will be the key to this team's success. We are already fashioning workouts to help try to achieve this.”
