Council approves 2017 preliminary budget, levy

At their most recent meeting, Tuesday, September 20, Maple Lake City Council members approved the city’s 2017 preliminary budget and levy based on their proposed budget for the city, and scheduled a Truth in Taxation hearing to be held December 6. Following December’s Truth in Taxation hearing, the final levy will be established.
The council approved a proposed budget of $1,833,998 and Mayor Lynn Kissock made immediate note of an increase to the levy as the budget stands, but pointed out that while the proposed levy can be reduced during intervening months, it cannot be increased.
Trying to be fiscally responsible but also looking toward maintaining the city’s infrastructure and putting aside funds for eventual projects and staffing additions, Kissock said that while the city is raising its tax rate a bit this year, the council aims to approach its goals in a conservative manner.
In 2016 the final tax rate was 59.304, and the proposed tax rate for 2017 is 65.391 – a 6.087 increase. The city’s tax capacity did rise approximately 1.78 percent, as residential properties generally increased about four percent but commercial values remained flat.
