Snake bit by injuries, the Maple Lake football team sent a younger, less experienced squad to Eden Valley-Watkins, Wednesday, Oct. 19, to face the Eagles in its final Mid State-Sub 1 game of the season.
The Irish put up a fight, according to coach Tim Knudsen, but in the end lost 44-0 to the Eagles who tied with Pierz for the top spot in the conference.
"The younger kids competed on every snap to the end of the game. That's the Maple Lake way," Knudsen said. "We will fight to the very end."
Ben Clapp ran 30 yards on 11 carries to lead the Irish. Mitchell Hoistad ran seven yards on eight carries and sophomore running back Darby Hanson ran two yards on one carry.
As a team, the Irish ran 40 yards on 29 carries.
Knudsen expected to have a handful of players back for the start of playoffs, Tuesday, Oct. 25. The Irish earned the No. 2 seed in the Section 4AA tournament and were to face No. 8 seed Minneapolis Edison in the first game.
