The Maple Lake girls basketball team is 5-4 overall after two more wins last week.
On Friday, Jan. 13, the Irish hosted the 1-10 Paynesville Bulldogs and came away with a 47-36 victory. The next day, on Saturday, Jan. 14, Maple Lake ball-handlers defeated Rockford 56-44, also at home.
The Irish immediately turned on the full-court pressure against the Bulldogs, which has become standard for the Maple Lake team, coach Adam Ronnenberg said. That pressure helped the home team jump to a 17-8 lead in the first eight minutes. Paynesville answered with a 9-0 run to tie the game at 17. The Bulldogs continued to slow the Irish attack by playing zone, but Maple Lake was still able to take a 23-19 lead going into the half.
After trading baskets for the first few minutes after the break, the Irish went on a 17-2 run to take a commanding 44-27 lead with about four minutes to go. From there Maple Lake cruised to another win.
