5-6 Grade Band Concert is Dec. 15

The two elementary bands will be presented in concert on Thursday, Dec. 15. The 5th grade, directed by Molly Jones, will play all Christmas songs. Then each section will play a selection of music to showcase their instruments. The 6th grade, directed by Jordan Swiontek, will perform three pieces, with the final piece a holiday song to end the show. The program will be presented at 6:30 p.m. in the high school auditorium.

Mixed Choir Winter Concert is Dec. 19

This year’s senior high choir, directed by Sue Nelson, will be performing a number of songs which include: “Festival Fan Fair,” “No Need to Knock,” “Soulful Silent Night,” and a selection of carols. The choir will end the concert with “It’s Christmas and All of That Jazz.” The performance will be free and open to the public on Thursday, December 15, at 8 p.m. in the high school auditorium.

Grades 1-3 Holiday Program is Dec. 8

  This year’s program for students first through third grades at Maple Lake Elementary is “A Celebration of the Season” directed by vocal music instructor Pat Johnson and accompanied by Krista Elsenpeter. It will be presented on Thursday, December 8, at 6:30 p.m. in the high school auditorium. Grade 1 will be singing “Five Plump Turkeys,” “Christmas Day,” and “The Babe.” Grade 2 will sing “Light the Candles,” “Suzie Snowflake,” and “Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer.” Grade 3 will follow with “Silver Bells,” “Joyous Noel,” and “Winter Wonderland.”

Winter Choir Concert set for Dec. 12

Under the direction of Sue Nelson, the 7th and 8th grade choir will sing a selection of songs ranging from spirituals to sea shanties at their concert on Monday, Dec. 12. The performance will include: “Shout Hallelujah,” “Canon Gloria,” “Down by the Riverside,” “Murasame,” and “Swing Down Chariot.” Members of the 8th grade choir will end the show with “Frosty the Snow Man.” The concert will be held in the high school auditorium at 7:30 p.m. and is free and open to the public.

No classes in Maple Lake on Jan. 20

Due to the end of the quarter on January 19, students at St. Timothy’s School and Maple Lake Public Schools will not have classes on January 20. Classes will resume the following Monday, January 23.

Schools conduct "Battle of the Books"

“Battle of the Books” is a voluntary reading incentive program for students in grades 3-8 used to encourage students to read good books and share them with others. Students will read a collection of books and “battle” with their peers by answering book trivia. Maple Lake Elementary will begin the “battle” on Friday, January 27, in the elementary media center starting with 4th grade from 9:25-10:25 a.m., followed by 5th grade at 10:30-11:30 a.m. From 12:45-1:45p.m. will be 3rd grade and 6th grade will be from 1:50-2:50 p.m. The Maple Lake High School “Battle” is set for Friday, February 3, in the high school media center. Students in grades 7-8 are allowed to participate and will be given a collection of books to read such as “Bridge to Teraebithia” by Katherine Paterson, “Downriver” by Will Hobbs, and “Nation” by Terry Pratchett. The eighth grade “battle” will begin at 11:54 a.m. and seventh grade will start at 12:23 p.m.

1-Act Subsections to be held on Jan. 28

Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted will be hosting the 1-Act Subsections on Saturday, January 28, beginning at 8:30 a.m. Maple Lake will perform “Cindy Rella” at 10:30 a.m. Under the direction of Mary Beth Barder, the production takes a comic twist on the original tale of “Cinderalla” as Cindy’s two spoiled sisters, with the help of their overzealous mother, compete for the role of Juliet. A fairy godperson and a British director are instumental in Cindy’s winning the role. Cast members include: Emalee Bryant, Bernadette Loch, Jenna Anderson, Shelby Lengyel, Benjamin Brinza, Michael Thomas, Taylor Trager, Amber Dale, Dylan Seth, Nina Simonette, and Miranda Jordan.
