Arnold "Arnie" and Lila Spike, Maple Lake

Arnold "Arnie" N. Spike, age 81, and Lila J. Spike, age 76, of Maple Lake, and formerly of rural Buffalo and Minneapolis, passed away due to injuries from an automobile accident. Arnold died on June 3 and Lila on June 1. Arnie was born in Maple Lake Township to Gustav and Ruth (Peterson) Spike on Nov. 22, 1931. He was baptized at Carlslund Swedish Evangelical Lutheran Church in rural Buffalo. He was confirmed in the Christian faith at Zion Lutheran Church in Buffalo. In 1951, he started working at Ralston Purina in Minneapolis, where he stayed until his retirement in 1993. Arnie enjoyed working in the garden, raising beef and chickens, hunting and fishing. For 50 years, the cabin he built on Platte Lake with the help of family was a favorite gathering place for family and friends. Lila was born on June 7, 1936, in Young America Township to Henry and Amalia (Brelje) Debner. She was baptized at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Plato. Lila was also confirmed in the Christian faith at St.

Howard H. Hokkanen, Annandale

Howard H. Hokkanen, 87, a long-time resident of Annandale, passed away Monday, June 24, 2013, at St. Cloud Hospital. Funeral services were 11 a.m. Saturday, June 29, at Good Shepherd Free Lutheran Church, Cokato, with Rev. Lyndon Korhonen officiating. Burial followed at Riverside Cemetery of French Lake Township. Visitation was 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Good Shepherd Free Lutheran Church, Cokato, and one hour prior to the service on Saturday. A prayer service was at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the church. He is survived by his wife, Adeline, of Annandale; children, Darlene (Dave) Zylstra, of Maple Lake, Patty (Steve) Hohag, of St. Michael, and Ken (Bev) Hokkanen, of Chaska; grandchildren, Kelley (Erik) Johnson, Joe (Jody) Zylstra, Alison (Ben) Menk, Ryan (Lisa) Zylstra, Ashley (Jeremiah Flintrop) Zylstra, Ben (Laurie) Hokkanen and Sara (Clint Gunkel) Hokkanen; eight great-grandchildren; nephew, George (Frances) Abernathy; niece, Liz (Virgil) Carlson; and many relatives and friends.

Angela E. Wagner, Annandale

Angela E. Wagner, age 28, of Annandale, passed away suddenly on June 26, 2013, at North Memorial Hospital, Robbinsdale. The funeral service was Monday, July 1, at 11 a.m., at Alive Lutheran Church, 121 W. Broadway, Monticello. Visitation was from 9:30 to 11 a.m. on Monday also at the church. Interment was at Lakeview Cemetery, Maple Lake. Angela was born Nov. 1, 1984, to Edward and Janet (Streich) Swingley in Buffalo. She graduated from Maple Lake High School in 2003. She attended St. Cloud Technical College, receiving her associate degree in child development in 2005. Following her schooling, she worked for Playhouse in Monticello. She married Blake Wagner on July 12, 2008, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Silver Creek. They lived in Annandale. Angela worked at New Horizons, in St. Michael, for 2 ½ years. She loved hunting, fishing and enjoyed working with children. She loved spending time with her husband, Blake, and their two puppies and enjoyed watching WWE.

Lowell H. Romann, Annandale

Lowell H. Romann, age 85, of Annandale, died Monday, July 1, 2013, at his home surrounded by family. Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. with funeral services at noon on Friday, July 5, at the Annandale Evangelical Free Church, with Rev. Dennis Johnson officiating. Burial will follow at Pleasant View Cemetery, Annandale. Lowell Herbert Romann was born July 30, 1927, to Herbert and Martha (Schmidt) Romann in Perham. He served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1945-1947. On March 7, 1953, in Iowa, he was united in marriage to Geraldine Schwartz. Lowell worked at H.A. Gas Spring Company in Minneapolis for 27 years. In 1977, Lowell and Gerry moved to Maple Lake, where they continued a commercial cleaning business and hobby farm. They moved to Annandale in 1987, where Lowell enjoyed helping his son, Russ, with his lawn service. Lowell liked to hunt, fish, and spend time with his large family.

Fuchs, Ramsdell graduate from U of M-Duluth

Alyson Fuchs and Megan Ramsdell, both of Maple Lake, were candidates for graduation at the University of Minnesota-Duluth undergraduate commencement on May 18. Fuchs received a bachelor's degree in accounting and Ramsdell earned a bachelor's degree in business administration and health care management.

Wright County Community Action is now enrolling for the 2013-14 Head Start program year. Operating a home-based option and 11 centers throughout Wright County and western Hennepin County, Head Start offers a comprehensive preschool program. WCCA Head Start offers: School readiness activities, developmental and hearing/vision screening, health and nutrition services, parent engagement opportunities and transportation, whenever possible. Families are encouraged to call the WCCA Head Start office at 320-963-5000 to see which program option meets their needs. There is no cost for the Head Start program.
