10th annual Pops Concert is March 4

The Maple Lake Band Department’s 10th annual Pops Concert will be at 6:30 p.m. Monday, March 4, in the high school gymnasium. It will feature all band students in fifth through 12th grade from the public school and St. Timothy’s School. Concessions and a raffle for four Minnesota Wild tickets will be available. The fundraiser supports the band department and Band Boosters, which supplies equipment and scholarships.

Maple Lake High School graduate Theresa Gilbertson was named to the dean’s list at Hamline University for the fall term of the 2012-13 academic year for earning a grade point average of 3.8. Gilbertson, the daughter of Darrell Gilbertson and Ann Isham, is majoring in anthropology.

Cody LaFave, Maple Lake

Services for Cody Richard LaFave, 19, of Maple Lake, were conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 27, at St. John’s Lutheran Church of Howard Lake. Cody Richard LaFave was born July 22, 1993, at Buffalo, Minnesota, to Dale LaFave and Linda (Muonio) LaFave. He grew up in St. Cloud, Minnesota. He was confirmed at Atonement Lutheran Church of St. Cloud and graduated from Apollo High School in 2011. Cody went on to live in Maple Lake and work for his mentor and friend, Tom Segner, at Kapseg Farms. Cody was very artistic as a youth and he enjoyed drawing very intricate pictures. As he grew, he became interested in skateboarding, bicycling, snowboarding, football, basketball, wrestling, swimming, snowmobiling, boxing, shooting pool, darts and hunting. Most recently, he built his own pulling truck, went to tractor pulls, loved farming, welding, mechanics and John Deere. Most of all, Cody loved to spend time with his family and friends. He loved babies and children.

Speech team wins Cambridge-Isanti meet

The Maple Lake High School speech team won the small-school division of the Cambridge-Isanti Speech Meet on Saturday, March 23. Placing for the Irish were: Maddie Nelson, third, discussion; Dylan Schlueter, fourth, discussion; Kyle Pilger, sixth, discussion; Blair Stewig, seventh, discussion; Jenna Anderson and Amber Dale, fourth, duo interpretation; Brooke Ankerfelt, eighth, great speeches; Hanna Stewig, eighth place, informative; and Charlie Stejskal, champion, extemporaneous speaking.
