Jingle Ball Dance set for Dec. 3

The Maple Lake High School Student Council will be hosting the semi-formal Jingle Ball Dance on Saturday, December 3, from 8 p.m. to midnight. Seventh- and eighth-graders will be required to leave at 11 p.m. Discounted tickets are available in advance in the high school office. Tickets will also be available at the door.

Maple Lake Spelling Bee is Feb. 1

The Maple Lake School District Spelling Bee has been scheduled for 1:15 p.m. Friday, Feb. 1, in the high school auditorium. Any home schools within the district with students in fifth through eighth grades wishing to be represented should contact spelling bee coordinator Kris Harlan at Maple Lake Elementary by Jan. 16. Please include the student’s name, grade, parents’ names, address and phone number.

Bob Baca, Route 55 concert Jan. 16

Jazz trumpet soloist Bob Baca will join Route 55 Jazz Band for a concert at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 16 at Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted High School Auditorium. Baca has perfomed with the Milwaukee Symphony, Minnesota Orchestra, the radio ensemble for Garrison Keillor’s “A Prairie Home Companion” and is a current member of the Phillip Brunelle “Plymouth Music Series Orchestra.” A free-will offering will go toward music clinics for local high school jazz bands.

Dad's Belgian Waffle Dinner is Jan. 14

Supporting Annandale Students will be hosting a Dad’s Belgian Wafffle Dinner as a sixth-grade ELC fundraiser from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 14. Advance tickets are available at Star Bank in Maple Lake and Annandale, Annandale State Bank in Annandale and Clearwater, In Hot Water, Arenson’s and Shear Style. ACT registration deadline is Jan. 11

Registration is now open for the Feb. 9 administration of the ACT college and career-readiness exam. Students who want to take the exam must register by Jan. 11. Students may register online at www.actstudent.org or by mail using paper registration forms from the school counselor or by requesting a regristration packet from ACT. During registration, students may select up to four colleges or universities to receive the score reports at no additional charge. Test prep material is available at the ACT website.

Upcraft named to NDSU dean's list

Jennifer Upcraft, an architecture major from Maple Lake, has been named to North Dakota State University’s dean’s list. A student must earn a grade point average of 3.50 or higher and be enrolled in at least 12 class credits to qualify.

Ida 'Maggie' Alama, Cyrus

Ida (Maggie) Esther Alama, 75, passed away on January 3, 2013, at the Stevens Community Medical Center in Morris. Maggie was born on March 2, 1937, in Chatham Township, Wright County, to Ralph and Ida (Hoffman) Marquette. Maggie grew up in the Maple Lake area where she attended country school. Maggie married Vernon Holland in 1954, later divorced. She married Richard Alama in 1965. She loved gardening and playing cards. She also loved singing and playing guitar. She was a wonderful cook, enjoyed baking and sharing her goodies with friends and family. Maggie was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Richard; sister, Pauline (Tootie) Stumpf; and four brothers: Gene, Clyde, Benjamin, and John Marquette.

Deborah Sorgert, Annandale

Deborah F. Sorgert, age 56, of Annandale, died Saturday, Dec. 22, 2012, at North Memorial Medical Center in Robbinsdale. Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 27, at the Annandale Evangelical Free Church with Rev. Dennis Johnson officiating. Burial followed at Pleasantview Cemetery, Annandale. Visitation was from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday at the Dingmann Funeral Care Chapel, Annandale, and one hour prior to services at the church. There was a prayer service 7 p.m. Wednesday. Deborah Faye Sorgert was born Dec. 5, 1956, to Allen and Johnnie (Hunter) Anderson in Duluth and graduated from Hermantown High School in 1975. She married Paul E. Sorgert on March 7, 1986, and she worked for Nash-Finch in St. Cloud. She was a member of Annandale Evangelical Free Church and enjoyed bowling, crocheting, sports, camping, being on the Lake, and spending time with family and friends.
