Howard 'Howie' Linstrand, Le Mars

Howard “Howie” Linstrand, 85, of Le Mars, formerly of Maple Lake, Minnesota, passed away Saturday, June 2, 2012, at the Good Samaritan Society in Le Mars, Iowa. His funeral was at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 5, 2012, at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Brunsville, Iowa with Pastor Ben Worley officiating. Interment with military honors provided by the Herren-McHale-Wilken American Legion Post of Brunsville was at Memorial Cemetery in Le Mars. Pallbearers were Scott Linstrand, Todd Bates, Tom Linstrand, Warren Bielke, Richard Erdahl, and John Swisher. Honorary casket bearers were Bob Linstrand, David Linstrand, Johnny Rudberg, Diane Pike, Janet Salmey, Carrie Linstrand, and Tanya Bates. Visitation was from 9 a.m. until service time at the church. Arrangements were with the Carlsen Funeral Home of Le Mars. Expressions of sympathy can be extended to the family through www.carlsenfuneralhome.com.

Community invited to review new textbooks

Maple Lake School District is adopting new resources for the world history class as well as the psychology class. Copies of the texts can be previewed by community members during the week of June 4 through June 8. If anyone would like to come in and look at the texts, they can stop in the district office to preview them.

Joseph R. Lantto, Buffalo

Joseph R. Lantto, age 69, passed away on Monday, June 11, 2012, at University of Minnesota Medical Center-Fairview, Minneapolis, MN after a lengthy but courageous battle with leukemia. Joseph was born in St. Cloud, the son of George and Irene (Forare) Lantto. He was baptized and confirmed at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, French Lake. Joe graduated from Annandale High School and Northwest Technical College. He worked as a draftsman/CAD operator for Electric Machinery in Minneapolis for 3 years and Wright-Hennepin Cooperative Electric Association in Rockford for 34 ½ years when he retired. Joseph Lantto and Marcia Peterson were married on April 11, 1964, at Zion Lutheran Church in Buffalo, by Pastor Andrew Cornell. Joe joined Zion Church and was an usher for many years. He also became a Stephan minister. Joe changed his life in 1978 when he completed a recovery program at St. Mary’s Hospital and maintained his sobriety for the rest of his life.

James M. Leahy, Denver, CO

After a more than a two-year battle with metastatic prostate cancer, James Miland Leahy Jr., 72, of Littleton, Colorado, died on Sunday, June 10th, 2012, in Denver. Jim was born on September 8, 1939, in St. Cloud, Minnesota, first child of Margaret M. and James M. Leahy. He was followed in birth by siblings, Timothy, Molly and Lenora over the next six years. “Mino” and his siblings grew up in Maple Lake, MN where he went to Maple Lake Elementary and High Schools, worked at his father’s hardware store, his uncle Leo Weismann’s grocery store and attended St. Timothy’s Catholic Church. Among his best friends growing up were his cousin, Denny Leahy, and younger brother, Tim, who gave him his lifelong nickname of Mino. Jim always enjoyed telling stories of coming of age in a small and predominantly Irish Catholic town surrounded by his extensive family. He loved to recount that his Leahy uncles were the town lawyer, dentist, and banker.

Janet Lenore Hance, Monticello

Janet Lenore Hance, age 64, of Monticello and formerly of Buffalo, passed away on June 17, 2012, at her home on Little Cedar Lake. Jan was born on April 3, 1948, in Franklin Township, Wright County, the daughter of James and Lenore Pillatzki Bauman. Jan graduated from Delano High School in 1966 and went on to attend St. Cloud State. On June 8, 1968, Janet L. Bauman and Lawrence T. Hance were joined in Holy Matrimony at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Delano. God blessed their marriage with six children. Jan began teaching preschool at St. Francis Xavier School and taught there for many years off and on. She was made principal there in 2006. Jan also partnered with her husband, Larry, dairy farming and later in the family business, Hance Utilities, from 1983-2011. Jan was a faithful member of St. Francis Catholic Church in Buffalo. She was very active at church and at St. Francis Catholic School. Jan was the co-founder of The Wright County Tea Party and a former 4-H leader.

Patricia Marie Mavencamp, Apache Junction, AZ

Patricia Mavencamp died peacefully on July 6, 2012, at Arizona Hospice in Mesa, Arizona. Patricia Marie Paumen was born in Buffalo on July 19, 1957, to John and Alma (Uecker) Paumen. She attended St. Timothy’s Catholic School and graduated from Maple Lake High School with the class of 1975. She was an employee of Wagner Spray Tech for many years. Her career there ended on January 9th, 2002, when she became the wife of John (Jack) Mavencamp and moved to North Pole, Alaska. There she helped Jack build homes until they retired and moved to Apache Junction, AZ. In 2010 she was diagnosed with advanced liver disease and fought a brave battle until she succumbed to the disease. She leaves behind her husband, Jack; sisters, Marilyn (Roger) Wurm, Joni (Jeff) Whittaker; brothers, Duane, Dennis (Mary), William (Phyllis) and Fred Paumen; step-children, Jon and Tom Mavencamp, Mike (Meridith) Mavencamp and Missy (Colin) Meskell; and 7 step-grandchildren.

Donald K. Bolyard, Kenosha

Donald K. Bolyard, 87, of Kenosha, passed away on July 9, 2012, at United Hospital System – Kenosha campus. He was born on June 9, 1925, to David Donald and Adeline Bertha Bolyard in Homestead, Montana. He moved to Breckenridge, Minnesota, as a youth and graduated from high school there in 1943. He has maintained life-long connections with his classmates. On October 3, 1943, he married Shirley M. Gaulrapp in Breckenridge, Minnesota, at St. Mary's Rectory. They were blessed with 68 years of marriage and 13 children. Donald received his Bachelor Degree in Education from Concordia College and his Masters of Educational Administration from the University of Minnesota. He was a combat infantryman with the 96th Infantry Division, participated in the Invasion of Leyte during World War II and was awarded the Bronze Star. He was a life-long member of the American Legion Post.
