Volunteer Orientation Night is Sept. 11

Maple Lake School District 881 will be hosting its annual Volunteer Orientation on Thursday, Sept. 11, from 6:30 to 7 p.m. in the elementary media center. Anyone planning to volunteer in the elementary or high school this year needs to attend this training session. For more information, call Community Care at 320-963-6600.

Preparations underway for first day of school

Staff and family members at Maple Lake Elementary answered a call for help on Saturday as teachers worked to get classrooms ready for the start of the new school year on Sept. 2. This year's school opening was made considerably more complicated because four new classrooms constructed over this summer will not be ready by the start of school.

Carol Ellingson, Monticello

Carol (Lindquist) Ellingson, age 70, passed away peacefully at St. Cloud Hospital on Dec. 18, 2012, with family surrounding her bedside. A funeral service was conducted at 11 a.m on Saturday, Dec. 22, at Peterson-Grimsmo Chapel, 250 East Broadway, Monticello, with a private interment. Visitation was prior to the service from 9 to 11 a.m. at the Chapel. Carol was born to Rev. Swante and Marion (Clare) Lindquist, on July 17, 1942, in Swaziland, Africa. Her parents were missionaries there for many years. She attended most of her high school years at Monticello High School and graduated from Buffalo High School. She attended St. Cloud Beauty School, but found enjoyment in professional floral design. Her greatest joy in life was being a mother and a grandmother. She was also known for her exceptional beauty, profound creativity, unique sense of humor, and the ability to make anyone feel like they were the most special person in the room. She loved the Lord so deeply.

Edith Hoffman, Annandale

Edith M. Hoffman, age 95, of Annandale, died Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2012, at Parkview Care Center, Buffalo. Memorial services will be 1 p.m. Friday, Dec. 28, at Bethlehem United Church of Christ, Maple Lake, with Rev. Dr. Jeffrey Palmer officiating. The music for the service will be provided by Myrna Jude and David Schmidt. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery, Annandale. Friends may call from 4-7 p.m. Thursday at the Dingmann Funeral Care Chapel, Annandale, and at the church one hour prior to services. There will be a prayer service 6:30 p.m. Thursday. Edith Marie Hoffman was born June 27, 1917, in Rockford to Fred and Josephine (Carpenter) Hines. She married Erwin C. Hoffman on Jan. 22, 1938, and for the next 40 years they farmed in Albion Township, Wright County. Edith would proclaim that when she married Erwin and the birth of each of her children were the greatest moments of her life. He preceded her in death on April 19, 2008, concluding their 70 years of faithful marriage.

Arthur Rigenberg, Maple Lake

Arthur J. Rigenhagen, age 81, of Maple Lake passed away Friday, Dec. 21, 2012, at Mercy Hospital in Coon Rapids. He was born on Aug. 11, 1931, in Washington, Iowa, the son of Arthur and Appy Scearcy Rigenhagen Sr. Art enjoyed playing guitar, singing and visiting with people. He owned and operated for many years a piano-tuning business and also worked in real estate. Art was a faithful member of the Annandale Evangelical Free Church and often led Sunday afternoon worship services at Park View Care Center. His motto was “Smile, God loves you. He really does!” Survived by his wife: Marcella M.

Fern Rhoe, Annandale

Fern F. Rhoe, age 90, of Annandale died Saturday, Dec. 22, 2012, at the Annandale Care Center. Visitation began at 10 a.m., with funeral services at 11 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 28, at Zion Lutheran Church in Annandale. Rev. Martin Langemo officiated the service and burial was at Woodlawn Cemetery in Annandale. Fern Francis Rhoe was born June 19, 1922, in Silver Creek Township, Wright County, to Julius Ernest and Daisy Mae (Sutton) Repke. She was raised on a farm in Silver Creek Township and graduated from Annandale High School in 1941. She married Gilbert Frank Rhoe on Feb. 28, 1942, and he preceded her in death on Jan. 23, 1993. She was a homemaker, a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, the quilting group, and Lutheran Women’s Missionary League. She enjoyed sewing, canning, cooking, baking, fishing, the cabin near Cass Lake and gardening, and loved to share her produce with family, friends and neighbors.
