From classical music to classic

The Maple Lake High School Band Fall Concert, on Tuesday, Nov. 20, offered a little bit of everything. The Junior High Concert Band started the night with “The Great Escape March” and ended their set with “In the Hall of the Mountain King.” (Left) Hayle Goelz, Jayce Wagner, Nik Dahlgren and Dan Upcraft of the MLHS Jazz Ensemble jam out to “Smooth Operator.” The band followed that up with “So What,” “What I’d Say” and an encore performance of “Free Bird.”

St. Tim's second graders present demonstrations

Mrs. Alison Krutzig’s second-grade students at St. Timothy’s School recently presented demonstration speeches. “Watching my students put into practice all the lessons taught on giving speeches is so rewarding,” Krutzig said. “My class is proof that second graders can be very proficient public speakers.” She added she is always amazed by her students’ poise, interesting approaches and creative ideas.

St. Tim's Extravaganza is a shopping bonanza

The annual St. Timothy’s Shopping Extravaganza provided a wide variety of items for a Christmas shopping opportunity in the school gym on Saturday, November 10. A highlight of the event were the crafts made by the students of St. Timothy’s School. Pictured at right were students Dylan Hennen, Samuel Marquette, Hannah Warner and Jacob Galles displaying samples of the student-produced crafts available at Saturday’s Extravaganza.

MLHS Drama class to perform 'Around the World in 8 Plays' Nov. 15-17

The Maple Lake Drama class will be performing the play “Around the World in 8 Plays” on November 15, 16, and 17. The comedy involves 8 mini performances all involving ridiculous plotlines and crazy characters. The stories travel all around the world from South America in “The Lost Beads” to the land of the Arapaho people in “The Little Owl Boy.” The curtain opens at 7:01 sharp. Student performers are: Jenna Anderson, Kyle Hickman, Luciano Saucedo, Miranda Jordan and Amber Dale, Maria Zaske, Zach Johnson, Jill Boros, Bernadette Loch, Chelsie Weege, Caleb Gindele, Courtney Klingelhoets, Rebecca Loch, Maddie Nelson, Kaitlin Loch, Hailee Malachek, Lexy Medley, and Jada Anderson.

Bingo Fun Night is Nov. 15

The fourth grade at Maple Lake Elementary will be hosting a Bingo Fun Night from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 15, in the elementary cafeteria. Families are invited to enjoy popcorn, pop and prizes.

Fall Band Concert is Nov. 20

The Fall Band Concert at Maple Lake High School is set for 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 20, in the MLHS auditorium. The concert will include the Senior High, Junior High and Jazz bands playing a variety of numbers that include “In the Hall of the Mountain King,” “Raging Thunder,” and “Smooth Operator.”

St. Tim's to host Thanksgiving Dance

St. Timothy’s School will be hosting the annual Thanksgiving dance from 3 to 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 21, at the Maple Lake American Legion. Students from St. Timothy’s and Maple Lake Elementary are invited to attend. Other activities will include a football toss, face painting and refreshments.

School to close for Thanksgiving

St. Timothy’s School and Maple Lake Public Schools will be closed on Thursday, Nov. 22, and Friday, Nov. 23, for the Thanksgiving holiday. Classes will resume on Monday, Nov. 26.

David Powers, Elbow Lake

David Powers, 77, Elbow Lake, died Monday, November 5, 2012, at the Douglas County Hospital in Alexandria. The funeral service for David Powers was held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, November 9, 2012, at Peace Lutheran Church in Barrett with the Rev. Matthew Rose officiating. Burial was in the Peace Lutheran Cemetery, Barrett. Visitation was at the Erickson-Smith Funeral Home in Elbow Lake on Thursday from 5 – 7 p.m. and resumed at the church one hour before the service on Friday. David Miles Powers was born August 30, 1935, in Barneveld, Wisconsin, to Elliot and Mabel (Miles) Powers. His family moved to Barrett when Dave was a youngster and he attended school in Barrett. After graduation, he moved to Minneapolis where he met Marion Lofgren, and on December 29, 1956, the couple was married at Victory Lutheran Church in Minneapolis. Soon after, David was drafted into the US Army.
