St. Cloud State University’s Mary Dank will teach “Deal me in!” math games during math night from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 22, in the elementary.

One-act play public performance is Jan. 24

Maple Lake High School will be presenting the one-act play “Do Not Go Gentle” as this year’s contest piece. The public performance will be 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 24. This drama investigates the impact of the death and life of a family’s matriarch on the family members, including the deceased.

Maple Lake grads named to dean's lists

Several Maple Lake High School graduates have been recently named to deans’ lists. Brooke Decker and Dillon McBrady have been named to the University of Minnesota, Morris dean’s list for the fall 2012 semester, with a grade point average of at least 3.66. Dominic Lauer, a senior nursing major, was named to the fall 2012 dean’s list at the College of St. Scholastica in Duluth, with a GPA of at least 3.75. Nicholas DeChene has been named to the University of Wisconsin-Superior dean’s list, with a GPA of at least 3.5.

Anthony Miessen, North Port, Fla.

Anthony (A.J. /Tony) Miessen, 84, of North Port, Fla., formerly of Annandale, passed away Jan. 12, 2013, at his home. He was born Feb. 21, 1928, in Seattle, Wash. Anthony was a member of the San Pedro Catholic Church, where he also was a 3rd and 4th Degree Knight with the Knights of Columbus. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 323 in Clearwater. Anthony is survived by his wife of nine years, Geraldine (nee Hackct); Children: Suzanne (John) Colbeth, Brooklyn Park, Nancy (Dan) Happe, St. Cloud, Barbara (Dale) Cochran, Seminole, FLa., Peter Miessen, Maple Lake, Michael and James Miessen, both of Crystal; 10 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Tony was preceded in death by wife of 48 years Margaret Mary (nee Bruns) Miessen. A Memorial Mass will be held Saturday, Feb. 9, 2013, 10:30 a.m. at St. Ignatius Catholic Church, Annandale. Reception to follow at the church. In lieu of flowers memorials preferred.

Catholic Schools' Week activites continue

St. Timothy’s School’s celebration of Catholic Schools’ Week will continue until Feb. 2. The penny challenge will conclude Friday. Each day at lunch, students are allowed to put pennies in their class bucket or sabotage another class with silver or dollars in their class buckets. On Friday, all pennies will be counted and winners will be determined. Proceeds will benefit the St. Timothy’s Scholarship Fund. A collection of baby items and cash for Birthright of Monticello will conclude at the end of the week. Birthright is a nonprofit organization offering counseling, legal help, medical and financial assistance to pregnant women. The medallion hunt will take place throughout the week, with students receiving daily clues to help them find the medallion and win a prize. Thursday will be Dress Up Day. Mass will be at 9 a.m., family hot lunch day will be at 11:15 a.m. and the Batttle of the Books will be from 12:45 to 1:30 p.m. for third and fourth graders and 1:45 to 2:30 p.m.

Nathalie A. Twardy, Maple Lake

Nathalie A. Twardy, 72, of Maple Lake, died Sunday, Jan. 20, 2013, at Park View Care Center in Buffalo after a long battle with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy. Graveside services will be 11:15 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 24, 2013, at Ft. Snelling National Cemetery, Assembly Area 5. Fr. John Meyer will officiate at the graveside. Arrangements are entrusted with Dingmann Funeral Care, Maple Lake. Nathalie Anne Twardy was born on Aug. 2, 1940, in Duluth to Earl and Myrtle (Keenan) Baer. She graduated from North St. Paul High School and went on to receive a B.A. degree from Metropolitan State University. On Nov. 24, 1972, Nathalie was united in marriage to Robert Twardy in St. Paul. Together, they lived in Maple Grove for 19 years and Clemmons, N.C., for five years before retiring in Maple Lake. Nat worked as an accountant for Target Corp. and Sara Lee Corp.

St. Timothy's School celebrating Catholic Schools' Week

St. Timothy’s School will be celebrating Catholic Schools’ Week from Jan. 27 to Feb. 2. The celebration begins with a pancake breakfast and bake sale on Sunday, Jan. 27. There will be 10 a.m. Mass, the fourth- through eighth-grade choir will sing, students will do readings and bring gifts.
