Speech team finishes third at Swanville

The Maple Lake speech team tied for third at Swanville on Saturday. Placing for the Irish were Amber Dale, Jenna Anderson, Maggie Carey; and Bernadette Loch, honorable mention in duos; Lexy Medley, honorable mention in serious prose; Brooke Ankerfelt, 3rd in great speeches; Charlie Stejskal, 1st in extemporaneous speaking; Melissa Timmers, 1st in storytelling; and in discussion, the Irish swept with Kyle Pilger taking 3rd, Dylan Schlueter, 2nd, and Maddie Nelson, 1st. Next week, the Irish travel to Norwood-Young America.

Anderson graduates Magna Cum Laude from St. Cloud State University

Trisaunia Anderson, of Maple Lake, graduated Magna Cum Laude with a bachelor of arts in psychology from St. Cloud State University, following the fall semester, along with more than 1,100 other students.

Salveson named to UMD dean's list

Christopher Salveson, of Maple Lake, has been named to the University of Minnesota-Duluth Dean’s List for Academic Excellence for achieving a grade point average of at least 3.5 in the Swenson College of Science and Engineering.

Kathryn Metz, the daughter of Robert and Maria Metz, of Maple Lake, received a bachelor of arts degree from Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota in Winona in the fall.

John Langanki, Dawson

John Albert Langanki, 63, formerly of Long Lake and recently of Dawson, passed away Feb. 26, 2013, at the VA Hospital in Gainesville, Fla., due to complications of congestive heart failure caused by exposure to agent orange while serving in the UMSC in Vietnam. He was preceded in death by daughter, Cheri, parents, George and Vivian (Dearing) Langanki, two sisters, Marianne Spicer, Linda Samela; brother, Les Langanki; and brothers-in-law, Bob Spicer and Louie Wakeman. He was survived by loving wife, Sue; son, Jeremy (Brenda); daughter, Laura Manthie; sister-in-law, Karen Langanki; Jay Juusola (Karn), Joe Kaley (Erin); grandchildren, Jessica Woods (Michael), Heather Pribyl (Greg), Nicole Clapp (Dave), D.J.

Streeter named to dean's list

Daniel Streeter, son of Nancy Vandergon of Maple Lake, was named with honors to the fall semester dean’s list at Northwestern College in St. Paul for earning a grade point average of 3.65 or better. Streeter is pursuing a degree in Kinesiology.

ACT registration deadline is March 8

Registration is now open for the April 13, 2013, administration of the ACT college and career readiness exam. Students who want to take the exam on this date must register by Friday, March 8. Students may register online at www.actstudent.org or by mail. Paper registration forms may be obtained from school counselor offices or by requesting a registration packet from ACT. Students must submit a photo of themselves to register for the exam.

Maple Lakers named to deans' lists

Lisa Northenscold and Zachary Stokman, both of Maple Lake, have been named to the University of St. Thomas’ 2012 fall semester dean’s list for earning a grade point average of 3.5 or better. In addition, Ashlee Blizil, of Maple Lake, has been named to the St. Cloud Technical and Community College President’s List for the fall term, having earned a 4.0 grade point average.

Speech team finishes fourth at home

The Maple Lake Speech team took fourth place in the small-school division of its own meet on Feb. 23. Placing for Maple Lake were Maddie Nelson, third in discussion; Dylan Schlueter, sixth in discussion; Bernadette Loch and Maggie Carey, seventh in duo interpretation; and Charlie Stejskal, second in extemporaneous speaking. The 10th annual meet boasted 18 schools and more than 300 competitors from as far away as Stillwater, Swanville, and Le Sueur. Kimball Area was crowned first place in the small-school division; Le Sueur-Henderson took first place in the larger school division.
