College information meeting set for Feb. 28

There will be a college financial aid information session and junior parent college information meeting on Monday, February 28, at Maple Lake High School. The financial aid session will be led by Valerie Knopp, financial aid administrator from St. Cloud State University. She will provide information on paying for college along with detailed directions on completing the Free Application For Student Aid (FAFSA). This is a great opportunity for parents to get answers to college financing questions. The financial aid meeting starts at 6:30 p.m. in the high school media center.

Speech team takes 5th at Becker

The Maple Lake Speech team took 5th at the Becker Bulldog invitational on Saturday, February 19. Lauren Nelson was crowned champion in Discussion. Others placing for the Irish were Ebony Ortiz, Honorable Mention in Creative Expression; Jenna Anderson and Amber Dale, 6th place in Duo Interpretation; Robby Olsen and Ben Brinza, honorable mention in Duo Interpretation; Jackson Triplett, 6th place in Great Speeches; Megan Bruns, Honorable Mention in Serious Poetry. Head coach Eric Meyer was presented with the Bulldog Invitational Excellence in Coaching award. Next up, the Irish head to Dassel-Cokato Saturday, February 26.

Feb. 24 is Reading Fun Night

On February 24, Maple Lake Elementary School will be hosting the annual Reading Fun Night from 6:15-7:30 p.m. Guests may hear award winning picture books read aloud by school staff, students, and community members. Volunteers will also be doing face painting. Prior to the start of Reading Fun Night, PIE (Partners in Education) will be offering a spaghetti dinner from 4:45-6:15 p.m. in the high school cafeteria.

St. Tim's Scrapbooking Weekend Feb. 25-27

St. Timothy’s Home and School Association is offering a Scrapbooking and Crafts Weekend at St. Timothy’s School. The fun begins on Friday, Feb. 25, at 4 p.m. and runs ‘til midnight. Scrapbookers can return on Saturday at 7:30 a.m. until midnight. Sunday, Feb. 27, scrapbooking and crafts will take place from 7:30 a.m. to noon. All of the meals served will be potluck. Speech team places sixth at Ogilvie

The Maple Lake Speech Team took 6th at the Ogilvie Lions invitational on Saturday, February 12. The large meet, which doubled Ogilvie's population for a few hours on Saturday, was a challenge for the young Maple Lake squad. Placing for the Irish were Lauren Nelson, first in Discussion; Jackson Triplett, fourth in Great Speeches, and Jenna Anderson and Amber Dale, honorable mention in Duo Interpretation.
Next up for the Irish is Becker on Saturday, February 19.

Meyer nominated for Teacher of the Year

Eric Meyer was named one of 108 candidates for Minnesota Teacher of the Year.  Meyer teaches 7th grade and high school English at Maple Lake High School. Meyer also coaches speech and volleyball at Maple Lake, and is currently president of the Maple Lake Federation of Teachers.

Irish take third at speech meet

At Albany on Saturday, February 5, the Maple Lake speech team took 3rd place in the small school division. Placing for the Irish were: Ebony Ortiz--Honorable Mention in Creative Expression; Lauren Nelson--6th place in Discussion; Jackson Triplett--6th place in Great Speeches; Courtney Klingelhoets--Honorable Mention in Humorous Interpretation; Dominic Gapinski--5th place in Original Oratory; Brooke Ankerfelt--6th place in Original Oratory; Shelby Campbell and Katie Cratie--Honorable Mention in Serious Prose
Up next, the Irish travel to Ogilvie for the Ogilvie Lions Invitational on Saturday, February 12.
