Festival of Nations May 3 at MLE

The Festival of Nations 6th Annual Event is planned for 10 to 11:30 a.m. Friday, May 3, at Maple Lake Elementary School. Students researched 33 different countries and will present their information in the elementary gym. Everyone is welcome.

Viola M. Frederick, Annandale

Viola M. Frederick, age 100, of Annandale, died Tuesday, May 7, 2013, at the Annandale Care Center. Funeral services will be 1 p.m.. Friday, May 10, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Annandale with Rev. Dave Nelson officiating. Burial will follow at the Cokato Finnish Cemetery. Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Dingmann Funeral Care Chapel, Annandale, and one hour prior to the service, Friday, at the church. Viola Marie Frederick was born Jan. 27, 1913, in Middle River to Walter and Anna (Nicka) Matsen. She was united in marriage to Clifford Widlund and he preceded her in death. She was later united in marriage to Lawrence Frederick and he also preceded her in death. She lived most of her life in Annandale, living a short time in Minneapolis and Walker. Viola owned and operated Mom’s Café in South Haven in the 1950s and went on to work at the Twin Cities Arsenal in New Brighton. She was a former member of the Walker Legion Auxiliary.

Robert "Bob" Glynn, Maple Lake

Survived by wife, Audrey; sons, James, Robert, Richard (Kathy), Thomas (Rita), and Stephen; daughter, Mary Block (Michael); 13 grandchildren; brothers, James, Tom (Carmel); sisters, Rosemary Law and Elizabeth Ann Glynn and many nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by wife and mother of his children, Catherine Horton Glynn; infant son, Mark; parents, Jay and Marie Flanagan Glynn; brother, Earl; brother-in-law, Patrick Law; sister-in-law, Helen Glynn. Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Saturday, May 18, at St. Timothy Catholic Church, Maple Lake. Interment at St. Timothy Cemetery. Memorials preferred to St. Timothy School Scholarship Fund.

Larry C. Oftelie, Maple Lake

Larry C. Oftelie, age 65, of Maple Lake, passed away peacefully into the arms of our Lord on May 4, 2013, at Lake Ridge Care Center in Buffalo. Services will be 6 p.m. Thursday, May 9, at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Maple Lake. Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. at the church. Interment will be at 11 a.m. Friday, May 10, at Fort Snelling National Cemetery. Larry was born in Crookston on Feb. 17, 1948, to Knute and Helen Oftelie. He was baptized on April 26, 1948, and confirmed on Oct. 6, 1963, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Crookston. He graduated from Crookston High School on June 1, 1966. Larry served his country in the US Army from March of 1968 to March of 1970, serving one year in Vietnam. He served in the US Army Reserves until May of 1972. He married Judy Tufte on Nov. 26, 1971. Larry served with the Happy Hooligans of the US Air National Guard of North Dakota from 1972 until his retirement in 1991.

Terry Allen Runke, Buffalo

Terry Allen Runke, age 61, of Buffalo, and formerly of Hutchinson, passed away on Friday, May 3, 2013, while turkey hunting in South Dakota and is now in the great hunting field of heaven. Terry was born on June 22, 1951, in Hutchinson, to Milan and Lucille Carlson Runke. After graduating from Hutchinson High School, he and his friend, Leigh Anglin, worked on the wheat harvest based out of York, N.D., working for Don Haugen where they were known as “Haugen’s Heroes” and “Wheat Whackers.” Terry graduated from Hutchinson Vocational Technical in 1974 with a degree in audio visual technology. He worked for the Marshall School System then moved to Maple Lake, where he worked as the Samsung repair man for the Twin Cities metro area. Terry was an avid hunter and fisherman. He taught gun safety for 31 years.

Lucille Smith, Maple Lake

Lucille B. Smith, age 82, of Maple Lake died Tuesday, April 30, 2013, at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis. Mass of Christian Burial was 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 3, at St. Timothy Catholic Church, Maple Lake, with Fr. John Meyer as the Celebrant. Burial followed at St. Timothy’s Catholic Cemetery, Maple Lake. Lucille Bernadette Smith was born May 19, 1930, in Maple Lake, to Jule and Bernadette (Martin) Provo. She was united in marriage to Donald Carl Smith on Oct. 30, 1947, in Maple Lake, and he preceded her in death on Feb. 1, 2005, in Robbinsdale. Lucille was a member of St. Timothy Catholic Church, where she has served on the CCW, sang in the choir for 21 years, was a Eucharistic Minister to homebound church members for nine years and volunteered as a “Grandma” at the Parish school. She enjoyed her church, singing in the church choir, spending time with family, especially her grandchildren, and traveling.

Language arts resources available for review

Maple Lake School District is adopting new language arts resources for grades kindergarten through sixth grade. Copies of the texts can be previewed by community members during the week of May 13 through May 17. If anyone would like to review the texts, they may contact Principal Kris Harlan and she will arrange for the materials to be previewed at the Maple Lake Elementary office.

Families sought to host exchange students

ASSE International Student Exchange Programs, in cooperation with the local high school, is looking for local families to host boys and girls between the ages of 15 to 18 from a variety of countries, Norway, Denmark, Spain, Italy, Japan, to name a few. ASSE students come with an enthusiasm to practice their English and experience American culture. They also love to share their own culture with their host families. Host families welcome these students into their family, not as a guest, but as a family member, giving both the students and families a rich cultural experience. ASSE students have pocket money for personal expenses; and full health, accident and liability insurance. ASSE students are academically selected into the program and host families can choose students from a variety of backgrounds, countries and interests.

Lorentz receives Orlin Harbarth Scholarship

Jacob Lorentz, of Maple Lake, was recognized for receiving an Orlin Harbarth Scholarship from Ridgewater College in Willmar on April 2. Students received awards for their participation in state and national Postsecondary Agriculture Students (PAS) contests. The state PAS contests were held in Marshall, Minnesota in February and the national contests were held in Louisville, Kentucky in March. Students were also recognized at the banquet for other academic achievements. Lorentz is the son of Jeff and Amy Lorentz, of Maple Lake.

Barbara Geyen, Maple Lake

Barbara M. Geyen, age 65, of Maple Lake, passed away after a short battle with cancer on Friday, April 26, 2013, at Abbott Northwestern Hospital, Minneapolis. Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 8, 2013, at Dingmann Funeral Care Chapel, Maple Lake. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service on Wednesday. Deacon Ron Freeman will officiate. Burial will follow at St. Timothy’s Catholic Cemetery. Barbara M. Geyen was born Aug. 12, 1947, in St. Cloud, to Donald and Evelyn (Wolfsteller) Geyen. Upon graduation from Maple Lake High School in 1965, Barb continued her education at College of St. Catherine in St. Paul where she earned her degree. Barb shortly worked for Gold Bond in Minneapolis before she began her career with Control Data. As a part of the Control Data team, Barb worked in Minneapolis before relocating to Exton, Pa., where she resided the past 20 years. Upon her retirement in October of 2012, Barb moved back home to be closer to family.
