Speech team places sixth at Ogilvie

The Maple Lake Speech Team took 6th at the Ogilvie Lions invitational on Saturday, February 12. The large meet, which doubled Ogilvie's population for a few hours on Saturday, was a challenge for the young Maple Lake squad. Placing for the Irish were Lauren Nelson, first in Discussion; Jackson Triplett, fourth in Great Speeches, and Jenna Anderson and Amber Dale, honorable mention in Duo Interpretation.
Next up for the Irish is Becker on Saturday, February 19.

Meyer nominated for Teacher of the Year

Eric Meyer was named one of 108 candidates for Minnesota Teacher of the Year.  Meyer teaches 7th grade and high school English at Maple Lake High School. Meyer also coaches speech and volleyball at Maple Lake, and is currently president of the Maple Lake Federation of Teachers.

Irish take third at speech meet

At Albany on Saturday, February 5, the Maple Lake speech team took 3rd place in the small school division. Placing for the Irish were: Ebony Ortiz--Honorable Mention in Creative Expression; Lauren Nelson--6th place in Discussion; Jackson Triplett--6th place in Great Speeches; Courtney Klingelhoets--Honorable Mention in Humorous Interpretation; Dominic Gapinski--5th place in Original Oratory; Brooke Ankerfelt--6th place in Original Oratory; Shelby Campbell and Katie Cratie--Honorable Mention in Serious Prose
Up next, the Irish travel to Ogilvie for the Ogilvie Lions Invitational on Saturday, February 12.

Shamrock Golden Word of the Week

Maple Lake Elementary is starting a new vocabulary project called “Shamrock Golden Word of the Week,” which focuses on ‘Golden Words’ or words like exquisite, generous, gloomy, etc. which boost students’ expressive vocabulary. There will be one golden word of the week each week for the rest of the school year. Each classroom will be coming up with unique sentences using the golden word of the week and posting them by the pot of gold display in the school hallway. This week’s word was “mythical.” Below are the best sentences from each grade level:  
Kindergarten: “Dragons and knights are in mythical stories,” from Annie Jost’s afternoon class.

Post Prom Party to host dinner

The fifth graders at Maple Lake Elementary will be performing the musical Update: Earth - where kids “Rock the World” for the environment on Thursday, March 17. Update: Earth is a musical review about the ongoing quest to better the world's environment. The show begins at 7:00 p.m. in the high school auditorium. Admission is free, and all are welcome to come.
The Maple Lake Post Prom Party Committee will be hosting a dinner at the Maple Lake VFW on Wednesday, April 6, from 5 to 7 p.m.  The dinner will include a choice of chicken strips, 21 shrimp or two pork chops. All proceeds will help support the Post Prom Party.

Spring Program planned at St. Timothy's

The annual Spring Program at St. Timothy’s School is planned for 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 7, in the school gym. The program, under the direction of music teacher Carrie Yerke, is entitled “The Seven Sacraments.” All students from kindergarten through sixth grade will be participating in the program. The students will be acompanied by Krista Elsenpeter Tarbox and Paul Stokman. Arts and Academics projects will be available for viewing in the halls and classrooms after the program.

Speech team takes fourth at NL-S meet

The Irish Speech team took 3rd in small school division at Fridley on Saturday, March 5.  Placing for the Irish were Jenna Anderson and Amber Dale. Next up for the squad is the Central Minnesota Conference meet Monday, March 14, at Kimball. 
The Irish speech team took 4th at the New London-Spicer speech meet on Saturday, March 19. Placing for the Irish were Lauren Nelson, 2nd in Discussion; Charlie Stejskal, 7th in Extemp. Speaking; and Amber Dale, and Jenna Anderson, 7th in Duo Interpretation.  The season continues Saturday, April 2nd, at subsection competition in Royalton.
