Read & Redeem to win prizes at the Maple Lake Library

The Read & Redeem certificate winners for week 6 are Gunnar and Isabelle Melgaard. They are pictured picking up their free cookies with Lake Region Cenex employee, Shannon Lemberg.

The Maple Lake Library’s free program, Read & Redeem, is open to children aged 5 and older. Participants pick up a slip each week at the library and check out a book at an appropriate reading level. They record the book they read on the slip and return it the next week to redeem it for that week’s prize.

Storytime with Marie had kids hopping to a frog theme

These children attended story time: Elijah Dorse, Tyler Reinke, Hazel Jacobson, Gunnar Melgaard, Lauren Peterson, Kate Peterson, Kenna Hennen, Isabelle Melgaard and Charlie Peterson. Library Storytime is held every Tuesday this summer through August 16, at the McHugh building (next to the bakery) from 9:30-10:30 a.m., for children ages 2-6. There is no registration required, but children must be accompanied by an adult. COME JOIN US! (Photo submitted by Marie Mavencamp)

“Ribbit, ribbit” - The McHugh building sounded like a big pond when nine children enjoyed a frogs theme. They listened to fun stories about frogs, and even acted out “Five Green and Speckled Frogs” with frog puppets, and hopped around the room adding frogs to their line until everyone was participating. Then they picked out their favorite frog picture to color. At the end of storytime they received a snack of “logs and frogs” to take home and make “frogs on a log” to eat.

A small group of “Books with Boone” loyalists gathered at the Maple Lake Library this week, and shared their mutual affection for the Maple Lake Bakery. Then they made their own sweet treat – a s’mores snack mix to take home and share with their families. The readers also checked some local papers for tasty recipes and worked on a crossword puzzle that was all about baking.

This week was all about the newspaper at Books with Boone, beginning with our own Maple Lake Messenger. The biggest group of readers so far this summer explored the library’s “Local News” section to peruse the papers of nearby communities and had a chance to write their own newsletter, the Books with Boone Briefly, copies of which will be displayed at the library.

"Fly, fly, pretty little butterfly!” These words were chanted and sung at Marie’s Summer Storytime on Tuesday, July 12, at the McHugh Building. Thirteen children and nine adults enjoyed butterfly stories, learned butterfly songs, poems and finger plays. Many children brought pictures, toys and butterflies on clothes to share with the group. Elijah brought the four stages of the butterfly to show the children. Then they made their own butterfly with clothespins and tissue paper.
