January

Only two seniors- one girl and one boy – with a 3.0 grade point average or higher who excels in academics, athletics and fine arts can attain the status of Triple ‘A’ winner for their school for a shot at a state level award. In Maple Lake, those two seniors are Elijah Elsenpeter and Eva McClelland . . . As of Tuesday, Jan. 18, the Maple Lake City Council is whole again, with four council members and a mayor officially sworn in and seated. In the wake of an open, lengthy discussion that was characterized by a notable measure of negativity, Deb Geyen was appointed mayor until regular elections are held this November.

February

The Maple Lake Volunteer Fire Department held its annual banquet on Saturday, Jan. 29 at the American Legion where several fire fighters were honored for the hard work and dedication and the Fire Fighter of the Year was announced. Through the ruse of a game, Daryl Hennen found out he was the recipient for 2021. . . Anglers who braved the cold, Saturday, Feb. 5 to take part in the 47th annual Maple Lake Ice Fishing Derby were rewarded with a good day of fishing. According to organizer Greg Thomes, 153 Northern Pike were caught and submitted to the contest along with seven bass, 29 panfish and one walleye for a total 190 fish. “That’s not too bad of a day,” Thomes said. . . Donna (Loch) Bares is the winner of this year’s button contest for the upcoming Maple Lake St. Patrick’s Day Parade. . . Elizabeth Borgert will represent Maple Lake at the state gymnastics meet after a record-breaking sectional performance, Friday, Feb. 11 in Litchfield. Borgert set a new school record on the uneven bars with her winning 9.40 and advanced in all four events. . . Borgert did well enough at state to finish 16th in the all-around out of 24 gymnasts.
