The City of Maple Lake is now looking at a third proposal for a new liquor store.
Earlier this fall, the city approached three grocery store chains with a proposal to give the city liquor store franchise to a grocer willing to build a store in Maple Lake. In November, the city received a proposal from Lake Region Co-op to move the liquor store to a new addition that would also include an expanded grocery area and the potential for a satellite pharmacy.
At its meeting on December 15, the Maple Lake City Council heard from Jim and Jody Churchill, the owners of the current liquor store building leased by the city, with a proposal to move the liquor store to a new facility on the H&H Sport Shop property.
Jim Churchill provided the council with plans centered around the construction of a Dairy Queen west of the sport shop building. Churchill said talks on obtaining a franchise are moving forward with Dairy Queen and a site evaluation will be the next step in the process.
Churchill said the plan would also include a new access on Highway 55 re-aligned with Elm Avenue, an expanded sport shop, and a new liquor store on the area now occupied by a car wash. Churchill said they are working with MnDOT on the new entrance, which would also provide access to ball fields proposed by the school district for the east side of the football stadium.
Churchill said in six to seven weeks, they should know if Dairy Queen has approved the franchise. He said if that didn't work out, his only other option would be a Culvers Restaurant, but he hasn't investigated that franchise since the focus has been on Dairy Queen.
