Labeled the underdogs, the Monticello-Annandale-Maple Lake boys hockey team surprised everyone by upsetting No. 2 seed Delano in the first round of the State Hockey Tournament.
A 3-2 win over Northfield two days later put them in the finals where they played No. 1 seed and returning Class A champ, Hermantown, to a double-overtime dual that left the Moose just one goal shy of claiming that elusive title.
The Moose went home with second place, a still impressive finish to a first-ever state tournament appearance.
“The fact that we made it that far was pretty amazing given the fact that we were projected to lose the first game by seven goals,” Devon Lyons, a Maple Lake High School junior who plays forward for the Moose, said.
