Golf teams finish season at Sections

by Sally Krutzig
It was a bittersweet day for the Irish boys’ golf team on June 2, when they played their last meet at the 2010 5AA Sections. The end of the season meant no more late practices, and more importantly. the beginning of summer. But at the same time they had made lots of fun memories and good times all throughout the season. It was especially sad for seniors Evan Kadlec, Dom Lauer, and Gary Welch, who will be leaving the Maple Lake golf team.
At their final meet, the boys scored 14th out of 16 teams at their final meet. Individual scores were: Evan Kadlec, 88; Josh Hogan, 94; Colton Jones, 97; Mark Meyer, 98; Dom Lauer, 109; and Trevor Borell, 112.
Evan Kadlec, who had the lowest score of the Maple Lake boys, finished in 36th place out of the 102 golfers there.
At Sections, though, the team scores are what really counts, with only the top four moving on. The scores were: Orono, 302; Holy Family, 307; Breck, 334; Becker, 335; Delano, 335; Mound-Westonka, 335; Annandale; 338; Dassel-Cokato, 339; Watertown-Mayer, 340; Norwood-Young America, 355; Rockford, 364; Hutchinson, 365; Paynesville, 371; Maple Lake, 377; Glencoe-Silver Lake, 390; HL-W-W, 391; and K-EV-W, 391.
Though the Irish boys’ team may not have placed the highest, they weren't very far behind many of the teams ahead of them. They plan on continuing their hard work over the summer, so that next year they stand an even better chance of improving their Section standings.
The Maple Lake girls’ golf team also played in Section competition on June 2. They had good weather for it, with plenty of sunshine.
At Sections, the girls placed 12th out of the 15 teams there. Every team was fighting for those top four places that would earn them the right to move on to the second day of Sections and have a chance at State. The top four teams were: Becker, Hutchinson, Holy Family, and EV-W. Their scores, including both the first and second day of Sections, were: Becker, 365-368-733; Hutchinson, 371-374-745; Holy Family, 378-374-752; and K-EV-W, 371-404-775.
The rest of the teams there, who only played the first day, included: Annandale, 380; Glencoe-Silver Lake, 382; Breck, 384; Dassel-Cokato, 384; Mound-Westonka, 395; Delano, 402; Rockford, 403; Maple Lake, 418; Paynesville, 425; Watertown-Mayer, 433; and Norwood-Young America, 515.
Several of the Maple Lake girls had impressive individual scores, including: Emily Carey, 100; Tabitha Latzig, 102; Annie Schwede, 103; Ashley Becker, 113; Maggie Carey, 118; and Kirstin Kubian, 119.
Emily Carey had the lowest score on the team, and succeeded in placing 27th out of the 84 competitors.
This meet marked the close of the 2010 golf season for the girls. It wasn't quite as sad for them, though, since none of them was graduating. They all plan on seeing one another next year and playing together over the summer.
“I was very pleased with our 2010 season,” said Coach Steve Fuchs. “We are a young team and the girls worked hard to make steady progress. Hopefully, they will continue to hone their skills over the summer.”
