Irish baseball posts playoff wins, falls to Zimmerman in Sub-Section final

On Tuesday, June 1, the Maple Lake Irish baseball team hosted the Annandale Cardinals for the first round of the playoffs. The Irish won the game 8-4 and advanced to the second round of the playoffs.  
“What a great playoff game,” said Coach Tony Smith. “Irish Stadium was packed, it was a great crowd.” 
The Irish trailed the Cardinals 4-3 until the sixth inning. The rally started when Pete Nordlie got on base when he drew a walk and advanced to third off a Brian Redemske single. Next up was Luke Fobbe who drew a walk to load the bases. Picking up an RBI was Mitch Wurm when he hit a single that allowed Nordlie to score. Derek Rachel picked up four RBIs when he hit a grand slam to put the Irish up 8-4.  
“We hung around until the sixth inning and then we took over, Derek Rachel’s home run was huge,” said Coach Smith.
On the mound for the Irish was Wurm who pitched all seven innings and earned the victory.  He allowed four runs, five hits, three walks, and he also struck out eleven.

Irish vs. Delano
On Wednesday, June 2, the Irish traveled to Delano to play Dassel-Cokato. The Irish took the game in a 6-1 victory, earning a spot in the Sub-Section championship.  
The Irish scored their first run of the game in the first inning when Brian Redemske led off with a double. He was then brought in to score when Luke Fobbe hit an RBI single.
In the second inning the Irish picked up three more runs. Justin Bidwell and Jake Johnson hit back-to-back singles. Noah Kelm put down a sacrifice bunt which allowed Bidwell to score and Johnson to move to third. Pete Nordlie hit into a fielder’s choice but that allowed Johnson to score from third base. Next up was Redemske who hit a single which allowed Nordlie to advance to third. Nordlie scored when Fobbe hit a sacrifice fly.  
In the third inning Cameron Knudsen hit a solo home run to add one more run to the books.
On the mound for the Irish was Knudsen who threw all seven innings and earned the win. He allowed one run, seven hits, four walks, and he struck out three.  
“What a fun atmosphere,” said Coach Smith. “Getting the lead was a great advantage. I thought we played well, and the crowd was wonderful.”

Irish vs. Zimmerman
Playing in the Sub-Section championship on June 3 it was Maple Lake against Zimmerman.  The Irish played tough but fell in a 5-1 loss.  
The Irish had a total of three hits in the ball game, two of them coming from Mitch Wurm and the other from Pete Nordlie.  
The Irish scored in the top of the seventh inning when Brian Redemske was hit by the pitch. He was hit in the face by the ball so Dedrek Berndston was called on to pinch run. Luke Fobbe and Wurm both drew walks to load the bases. Picking up an RBI was Derek Rachel when he grounded out to the shortstop, allowing Berndston to score from third. The Irish were not able to continue to score runs, ending the game.  
“It just wasn’t our day at the ballpark,” Smith said. “Their pitcher was throwing strikes and we didn’t adjust. I’m sure we will bounce back and play well on Monday.” 
On the mound for the Irish was Fobbe. He threw four innings and picked up a loss. He allowed four runs, three hits, and two walks. In relief was Justin Bidwell who threw two innings and finished the game. He allowed one run, two hits, and three walks.

The Irish played on Monday in Section 5 2AA competition, falling to Orono by a score of 7-2. A report on that game will appear in next week’s Messenger.
