Baseball season ends at sections

On Monday, June 7, the Maple Lake Irish baseball team’s season came to an end when they lost to Orono by a score of 7-2 in section competition.
The Irish scored their only two runs of the ball game in the third inning. Jake Johnson hit a double, followed by Noah Kelm who drew a walk. Loading the bases was Pete Nordlie, who hit a single. Johnson was able to score when the Orono pitcher committed a balk, which advanced all runners one base. Picking up an RBI was Luke Fobbe, who hit a ground ball which allowed Kelm to score from third base. This concluded the scoring for the Irish.
On the mound for the Irish was Mitch Wurm. He threw four innings, allowing five runs to score, nine hits, three walks, while also striking out three. In relief of Wurm was Cameron Knudsen who pitched the last two innings of the game. He allowed one run to score, two hits, one walk, but also picked up three strikeouts.
“In this section tournament we saw some good players and some good teams,” said Coach Tony Smith. “I would put us in that category, we just didn’t get a big hit in either game. I hope the guys returning make a good return to the Section 5AA playoffs in 2011, it was a lot of fun!”
