Mavencamp competes at state meet

Representing Maple Lake, Colby Mavencamp traveled to Hamline University for the Boys’ and Girls’ State Track and Field meet on Friday, June 11.
Mavencamp earned the opportunity to participate in the meet after running a qualifying time of 15.66 seconds in the 110m hurdles.
Although many coaches may try to over-work their athletes for a state meet, Coach Ben Youngs said that he kept everything the same for practice, except that he and Mavencamp spent time watching film during his week of preparation.
“We looked at video for form,” Youngs said.
After spending the day watching AA competition and staying relaxed, Mavencamp began to warm up and get ready for his race.
“He did a great job of watching and then warming up,” Youngs said. “It was a really enjoyable day. I was relaxed and I tried to keep Colby relaxed.”
With a time in the middle of those competing at state, Mavencamp was placed in lane seven of the third heat, alongside Annandale's Pat Zoller.
“I thought running next to a familiar face might help take the edge off,” Youngs said. “It’s nice to have someone you know.”
Ten hurdles later, Mavencamp finished the race with a time of 15.79, just shy of qualifying for the second day of competition.
“This is a great way to end, even if it didn’t end up how he wanted,” Youngs said. “I’m really proud of Colby and it was nice to have a boy back at state.”
Donnie Haflich was the last Irish boys’ track athlete to participate in the state track meet as a 2002 participant in the 300m hurdles. Haflich placed 12th in that event with a time of 42.48.
Mavencamp will continue his track and field career, running for Hamline University next year.
